What's new and/or interesting in Philly theaters this weekend. Not a whole lot of films opening this weekend, but here's what's happening.
Most Likely To Rule: Madagascar 2: Escape To Africa
Even movie snobs have to acknowledge the appeal of a well done kid flick, and this one even seems poised to surpass the popularity of the first Madagascar movie. An all star cast including Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, Sacha Baron Cohen, Bernie Mac (R.I.P.), and Alec Baldwin provide voices for the film. In this sequel, the New York Zoo animals find themselves far from their Central Park home on the shores of Madagascar. They must plot to find their way back, and in the process encounter African animals of their own kind.

The Boy In The Striped Pajamas
This fictional tale shows the brutality of the concentration camp as seen through the eyes of the eight year old son of a Nazi commandant. He befriends a boy of his same age, a boy with whom he must play his games of chess through a barbed wire fence. As the movie progresses, the Nazi's son questions the principles by which his father and the Nazis operate and finds himself embroiled in a plot to help the imprisoned boy. While this movie certainly carries an important weight by highlighting the horrible plight of the many victims of the Holocaust, it is a disturbing story that should be viewed with a cautious reverence.

Soul Men
We miss Bernie Mac already, but at least we have this opportunity to see him appear opposite Samuel L. Jackson as they star as two former back up soul singers reuniting after 20 years to travel across the country and perform in a tribute concert for their old band leader. This one sounds questionable, but might be worth catching just to see Mac and Jackson do their own singing and dancing.

Most Likely To Suck: Role Models
Oh, Paul Rudd, how you disappoint me so. You had such promise back in the days when you were playing characters like Alicia's Silverstone's ex-step brother turned love interest in Clueless, or Jennifer Aniston's adorable gay best friend in The Object of My Affection. Starting with Anchorman, you've entered onto a downhill career path, and now you've stooped to a new level by co-starring with Stifler. And you don't even get top billing over him? For shame. So readers, if you feel like throwing away $10 and squandering 95 minutes of your lives, go see Seann William Scott and Paul Rudd debase themselves in this schlocky comedy about two doofuses who spend their court ordered service time mentoring impressionable youths.

paul rudd is funny! he belongs in comedies: 40 yr old virgin, wet hot american summer, knocked up...
Maybe so, and it's just the movies his picking that are bothering me, because I certainly like him a lot.
To be fair, the reviews on Role Models haven't been bad. It's got a Rotten Tomatoes Freshness rating of 74% right now. There are certainly worse things out there, especially in the cinematic netherworld of October-early November.
It might be getting decent reviews, but if you are going to the movies, better to spend your cinema dollars on something that is already out there, for instance Rachel Getting Married. Unless you are seeking mindnumbing nonsense (which does have its time and place) then by all means, see Role Models!
Perhaps. Personally, I'm hard-pressed to think of any movie that's worth spending $10 to go see these days.
And that's why God made Netflix.
Indeed. So where's our rental pick of the week? :-P
:) I think you may have given me a new column idea. I don't have time to research recent releases now, but I highly recommend Baby Mama which was recently released on DVD.
