- The Fraternal Order of Police Survivors' Fund has been depleted by the recent deaths of officers, so today, in an effort to bolster the fund, dozens of area restaurants, bars and businesses will donate 10 percent of their sales toward the Survivors' Fund in an event dubbed "Philadelphia Blue Day."
- "A University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing study released Friday found that difficulties in detecting external genital injuries led to disparities in rape-documentation and treatment in cases of assault and rape of darker-skinned women, causing cases to be reported less often than when light-skinned women are assaulted."
- The key government witness in the Fort Dix terrorism trial, who is expected to take the stand today, has already had his credibility attacked by the defense, which described him yesterday as a "serial fraud artist." Meanwhile, in the Fumo corruption case, Fumo's estranged son-in-law continued to provide potentially damaging testimony against the embattled legislator yesterday.
- Mayor Nutter announced yesterday that he'd delay announcing his budget cuts until next week because the city needs more time to fine-tune the plan.
- Both Pennsylvania senators and Mayor Nutter strongly criticized the USDA yesterday for terminating an innovative breakfast-and-lunch program in Philadelphia schools. In fact, Nutter went so far as to say: "This is one of the most cruel and inhuman decisions any government could make... a stupid decision."
- Philadelphians are being infected with HIV at a high rate—more than 50 percent higher than residents of New York City and five times the national average.
- Police are investigating three more fatal shootings, one that took place Sunday night, and two more that took place early yesterday morning.
- The Fifth Street tunnel under the Ben Franklin Bridge was closed to traffic this morning at 7AM for electrical repairs and is scheduled to reopen 3PM on Thursday.
