Whiz of the Web: Wednesday Whiz-Up

The best of the internet, squirted out in flavorful neon globules, just for you.

I used to have super human powers

  • LOLcats sing Metallica! Kind of. (Via Sarah)
  • Speaking of Metallica, a music journalist for a Swedish paper included in his review of the band's latest album a link to a user-edited, condensed version of said album, and even suggested the edited version was better. In response, the band's representative's at Universal have threatened to cut off the paper's access not only to Metallica, but to all of the label's other releases.
  • Marvel Comics is going to start putting up a couple of weekly, online-only comics to tie-in with their recent films: Iron Man: Fast Friends, about the relationship between Tony Stark and Jim Rhodes, and Incredible Hulk: The Fury Files, about Nick Fury's investigation into the Hulk. Unfortunately, you have to subscribe to Marvel Digital Comics (at a minimum of $4.99 per month) to read them. Lame! Whoever heard of paying for internet content? (Via Sarah)
  • A researcher realized that players of an MMO were using the scientific method to determine how to defeat difficult bosses, and came to the conclusion that video games are becoming the new hotbed of scientific thinking for kids today. Her paper on the subject will be published this spring. (Via Sarah)
  • There's an annual event in LA called the Hollywood Pitchfest, wherein aspiring screenwriters can pitch to movie and TV executives through a series of five-minute, speed-dating style meetings. The radio show Two Jacks in the Hole wanted to know if the whole thing was a scam (as apparently there are never any real execs there, the event costs an incredible $420, and none of the movies ever get made), so they sent in comedy writer Asterios Kokkinos with some hidden recording equipment, and he pitched some of the worst movie ideas of all time to see what kind of reactions he'd get. Check out the pretty hilarious audio here.
  • Get the name Sarah Palin would have given you if you were her child with the Sarah Palin Baby Name Generator! Phillyist would have been Fowl Overtime Palin. (Via Jill)
  • We are sad that the Fantastic Fest is so far away, but B-Side has brought it a little bit closer with their Fantastic Fest Online website, where 10 films from the festival will be streaming through Saturday 9/20.
  • Between October 2nd and 7th, Netflix will be sponsoring a contest in Times Square, wherein eight contestants will attempt to cast the new Guinness World Record for most consecutive hours spent watching movies. When it's all over, the winner will walk away, not just with the world record, but also with a lifetime subscription to Netflix, the inaugural "Popcorn Bowl" trophy, and $10,000 in cash. Nice!

I tried to buy one of those camera lens mugs, but it seems to be a photoshp creation.

Sadly, you are correct; I just followed the link chain back myself and found that the mug was merely a conceptual design. But hey, maybe somebody will now be inspired to turn the design into reality!
