
- Sources say that Governor Rendell and Mayor Nutter will announce at a 1PM press conference today that Foxwoods Casino has made an agreement with the state and the city to move its long-delayed slots parlor, originally planned for the South Philadelphia waterfront, to the Gallery at Market East.
- In January, former President Bill Clinton will replace former President George H.W. Bush as chairman of the National Constitution Center. Bush suggested Clinton as his replacement and helped recruit him. The center's 43-member board meets twice annually to set policy for the center, so maybe we'll see old Slick Willy around town more often.
- A Municipal Court judge yesterday recused herself in the case of two Philly cops accused of beating a graffiti vandal, saying that she knew the officers from seeing them around the justice complex, and didn't feel comfortable presiding over the case.
- A new report on child welfare released today reveals that Philadelphia children discharged from foster care re-enter the system at "extremely high rates."
- A suspect in the crazy subway hammer attack that we mentioned yesterday was taken into custody last night. The man's family called investigators after they recognized him and his five-year-old son in video broadcast on television. In contrast to earlier reports and statements from officials, a SEPTA spokesman says the other passengers did exactly what they should have: they got out of harm's way, and one contacted SEPTA police while another pulled the emergency switch.
- The Inquirer has the creepy and disturbing details from the trial of John Jackey Worman, the Delaware County man accused of creating thousands of pornographic videos of children. Apparently Worman has been loudly disagreeing with his own lawyer about how he's handling the case.
- Eric Smith, the teen accused in last summer's dirt bike killing, was found guilty yesterday and will spend the rest of his life in prison.
- Robert J. Scandone, a lawyer and longtime friend of Senator Fumo, says Fumo's contention that he advised him it was lawful to destroy e-mail while under FBI investigation is absurd and untrue.
- Two Philadelphia schools were among 320 schools nationwide that U.S. Education Secretary Margaret Spellings yesterday named "2008 No Child Left Behind – Blue Ribbon Schools."
- A statewide cap on electricity rates expires December 31, 2010, which means energy bills are likely to soar in 2011.
