Whiz of the Web: Wednesday Whiz-Up
The best of the internet, squirted out in flavorful neon globules, just for you.

- Another fun, geeky blog for us to read: Super Punch. (Via Amy)
- Defective Yeti's amusing thoughts on the Republican National Convention.
- If you hit Google this morning, you may have noticed that the logo is devoted to the Large Hadron Collider. That's because they switched the LHC on today, an event that some said would destroy the world. But because it's on now, and we don't seem to be dead, we guess everything went okay. Maybe it was thanks to Shiny Shiny's direct plea to the LHC to not blow up the Earth. We're still not sure we're entirely out of the woods yet, however, as Joystiq noticed the appearance of a familiar figure at the LHC whose presence certainly doesn't bode well for our continued existence.
- A little known but important fact, revealed via PostSecret.
- So yesterday was the big Apple event, entitled "Let's Rock." Included in the announcements was the unveiling of the new iPod Touch, which Apple is describing as "the best portable device for playing games." There's also a new iPod Nano, and both iPods will come with sweet new headphones similar to the kind that come with the iPhone. And if that's not enough for you, you can read Shiny Shiny's detailed liveblog of the event.
- The Thirteenth Hour is one of those books that hasn't been published yet, but has already been optioned for a movie. It's described as a cross between The Bourne Identity and The Time Traveler's Wife, but there are also shades of Memento. It follows a man accused of brutally murdering his wife who's given a chance to save her by going back in time, but only in one hour increments. He must put together clues leading to who killed her, and why.
- The upcoming film The Killing Jar is apparently a cross between hostage thriller and monster movie. It's about "a stranger armed with a shotgun who takes seven patrons hostage at a remote roadside diner. As the body count rises, the survivors discover that one of the hostages might be more dangerous than their captor." Michael Madsen, Harold Perrineau, and Danny Trejo are all attached to star.
- Check out this lengthy, totally kick-ass new trailer for Quantum of Solace.
- TMNT co-creator Peter Laird says they're close to making a deal to create a "hybrid" Ninja Turtle film—that is, part CGI and part live action. Read: no guys in turtle suits. Whew.
- The upcoming film Howl is about the court trial that took place after Allen Ginsberg's Howl was published in 1956 and promptly banned for obscenity. The impressive cast includes Mary-Louise Parker, Paul Rudd, Jeff Daniels, David Straithairn, and Alan Alda.
- We just love the headline on this one: "Finally, Julie Andrews Will Co-Star with The Rock."
- In case you're interested, here are Will Wright's top five games. He cheats and picks entire game series for four of the five.
- Can You Run It sounds like a pretty cool thing. It's a browser-based utility that checks your hardware configuration against the requirements for a game you select and tells you whether you'll be able to run it or not. (Via)
- When you're checking the weather, a lot of times all you really want to know is whether you'll need an umbrella today or not. And that's where Umbrella Today? comes in. (Via)
- Check out these hand-painted belt buckles with a retro gaming theme.
- The annual Simpsons Halloween episode is always a treat. This year's will parody It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown and Transformers, and apparently they already know that next year's will spoof zombie movies such as 28 Days Later. Wow, they plan ahead!
- 20th Century Fox is mulling the possibility of more X-Men spinoff movies, including one about the young X-Men, and one about Deadpool, a character played by Ryan Reynolds in the upcoming X-Men Origins: Wolverine. The studio is also considering reviving the Daredevil franchise for some reason.
- Stephen J. Cannell, creator of the TV series The Greatest American Hero, recently confirmed the rumors that a feature film is in the works.
- The Wrath of the Lich King is still making its slow way toward store shelves, but in the meantime, Blizzard is already planning more expansions for World of Warcraft.
- A hacker has modified Microsoft's handheld Xbox 360 keyboard for use with Sony's PSP, a pointless but nonetheless impressive feat.
- Part two of The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets' PAX diary.
- Nerd World is generally pretty nerdy, but this might be the nerdiest thing we've ever seen on it: a series of haikus about the lesser-known Marvel super hero team, Alpha Flight.
- Chris's Invincible Super-Blog presents a ridiculous short story told via captioned photographs of LEGOs. It's bizarre and silly, but the ending is brilliant, and really needs to be in the next Batman movie.
- Eagle Eye director DJ Caruso says he might be interested in taking over the director's chair on Thor.
- Frank Miller says he envisions Sylvester Stallone in the role of Batman in a movie version of his celebrated graphic novel The Dark Knight Returns. Rocky as Batman? We like it! "It stinks in Gotham! It stinks!"
- Geekadelphia has some pics from a very cool contest, wherein users were asked to design screenshots of modern games as if they'd been made for the Gameboy.
- G4 has a more detailed look at House of the Dead: Overkill.
- Of course we all know that the release of the film Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince has been pushed back to next year, but now it looks like the video game's release will also be pushed back so it comes out around the same time.
- Woo hoo! It's the Simpsons version of Number Six from The Prisoner! Brilliant.
