Yo, Philly in the News

- We're so proud: one of the Eagles cheerleaders (Janelle Stangl) has been named by Maxim as one of the NFL's four "most gorgeous" cheerleaders in the magazine's September issue, which hits newsstands today. Click through for a pic.
- The Daily News describes a climate of fear and anger in Frankford, with residents on the lookout for a serial rapist. "Anticrime activists passed out flyers in the neighborhood yesterday while police—in a massive manhunt—took the unusual move of releasing the name and picture of a man wanted for questioning." Keep in mind Dorrell Shaw, 26, has not been charged, and is only wanted for questioning. Click through to take a look at the police sketch.
- Investigators confirmed yesterday that molten metal and sparks from a welding torch at the Stables at Millennium in Conshohocken ignited the eight-alarm blaze that destroyed large portions of the Riverwalk at Millennium apartment complex last Wednesday. A group of residents quickly filed a lawsuit over the fire, seeking class-action status.
- Two Councilmen, Bill Green and Bill Greenlee, issued a press release yesterday afternoon announcing their intention to introduce legislation to ban drivers from using cell phones.
- Pamela Mayo and Wesley Brown, senior DHS managers who supervised workers implicated in the starvation death of Danieal Kelly, have been given brief suspensions without pay. Meanwhile, the lawyer for the lawyer who filed a lawsuit on behalf of the estate of Danieal Kelly insists his client is part of the solution, not the problem; that the lawsuit would benefit the parents' other children, not the parents themselves; and that Mayor Nutter and District Attorney Lynne Abraham should apologize to his client for their angry comments.
- Mark C. Eister, a former computer technician in the Harrisburg office of state Sen. Vincent J. Fumo, is scheduled to plead guilty this morning in U.S. District Court in Philadelphia. Meanwhile, in a 59-page trial memorandum filed with the court, prosecutors have laid out a road map on how they intend to press their fraud-and-obstruction case against Fumo and co-defendant Ruth Arnao. They've also increased the estimate of the amount of money stolen from $2 million to $3.5 million.
- Philadelphia residents unhappy with the proposed expansion of Fox Chase Cancer Center into a neighboring park were awarded legal standing in the case yesterday. The center and the city had wanted to limit them to "friend of the court" status. The difference, apparently, is the power to appeal.
- Governor Rendell plans to vote for Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton during the roll call at the Democratic National Convention. He said the idea is not to display disunity, but to honor the hard work of the people who supported Senator Clinton. He went on to say: "I'm going to cast my ballot for her, and then the moment I cast my vote, I'm going to continue to enthusiastically support Senator Obama. It's going to be a good release for all of us." (Via)
