Pickin' Up a Paper Route
No, not the kind that your parents made you get to earn extra money as a kid, but the kind that will be playing at Festival Pier at Penn's Landing tonight. Paper Route (MySpace) is the opening band on Paramore's Summer Riot tour, and the Philadelphia stop happens to be on this fine Friday. Rain be damned! The band recently released an EP, Are We All Forgotten. And the buzz around them is phenomenal. They've drawn comparisons to The Postal Service. It's kind of there, but based on the admittedly few Paper Route songs we've heard, we think the more appropriate comparison is to another Nashville-based band who's in town this weekend (and who has an eerily similar name), Paper Rival. Paper Rival, Paper Route. Paper Route, Paper Rival. Uma, Oprah. Oprah, Uma.
Paper Route is actually probably a little too mature for the general Paramore fanbase, and our guess is that a lot of the Paramore fans who will be hitting the show will probably get there late, skipping over Paper Route. Too bad for them, because Paper Route stands a good chance of stealing the show. Really, ironically, tonight's headliner is the band we're least excited about, because along with Paper Route, Phantom Planet and Jack's Mannequin are on the bill, both of whom are reliable for strong performances. (Fun tidbit about Paramore, though. The picture of the band that appears at the top of their Wikipedia entry was taken by Editor Jill at last year's Warped Tour.)
Festival Pier probably isn't the best venue for Paper Route's thoughtful, tuned-in brand of indie alt-rock. But we'll take what we can get, and what we can get should be pretty damn good.
Paramore, with Jack's Mannequin, Phantom Planet, and Paper Route
