Yo, Philly Down the Shore
What does the term "bennies" even mean? Locals and Wikipedia say that the term stands for the names of the cities along the North Jersey Coast Line: Bayonne, Elizabeth, Newark, and New York. Get it?
The term shoobie, which we probably hear more frequently, is used by residents from Long Beach Island to Cape May. The term was originally used to describe us Philly folks who took the train to the shore. Back in the day, the train gave out pre-packaged lunches that came in shoe boxes, hence the nickname "shoobie" was coined. Hey! Who can pass up a free lunch?! Regardless, you probably don't have to be from the above-mentioned towns to make an ass of yourself while visiting the shore. So this weekend show those locals that we won't stand to be called "shoobies" any longer.
Sport Card, Comic Book and Toy Expo is all weekend at the Wildwood Convention Center.
Wildwoods Classic Cup XXIV Hobie Cat Races are on Saturday and Sunday in Wildwood. This Phillyist had never heard of a Hobie Cat Race. Supposedly it involves sailing. Lots of it.
Boston is at the Topicana on Friday.
Chris Rock is at the Borgata on Friday. Bob Dylan is there on Saturday.
Smokey Robinson is at the Trump Marina on Friday and Saturday.
Bruce Hornsby is at the House of Blues on Saturday.
Jersey girl in the Olympics.
Classic & Antique Car Show at Historic Cold Spring Village on Saturday and Sunday.
For those of you that get the pleasure of being down the shore during the week, The Atlantic City Air Show is on Wednesday.

I'd always heard of a different etymology of shoobie: My grandmother told me that people who went down the shore just for the day, without a s place to shower or sleep, often put their belongings in shoe boxes, using them like a poor man's beach bag.

I have heard both re: the shoobies...the train ride would make sense though...once you had your shoe box lunch then you would have the shoe box to put your stuff in when at the shore!! whatever the case...this shore person will be glad when the dead of winter arrives!!!!
