As the Lebanon Daily News reports, the Philadelphia Historical Commission has added the once-magnificent but now-defunct Boyd movie theater, located on Chestnut Street between 19th and 20th Streets, to its list of historical buildings that may not be "demolished or altered." That's music to the ears of the Friends of the Boyd and anyone else interested in the preservation of the remnants of a bygone Philadelphia. Considering the National Trust for Historic Preservation has listed the Boyd as one of the 11 most endangered structures in the nation, it only makes sense for the city that holds this gem to follow suit. Now that it's not going anywhere, the next step is to decide what the hell to do with it.

The Boyd has a remarkable history and its designation means the survival of the last of the city's great movie palaces.
