
- At an emotional news conference yesterday, Mayor Nutter announced the suspension of seven more DHS workers in the starvation death of 14-year-old Danieal Kelly, saying, "I am fully, thoroughly, and completely pissed off." He went on to say, to the other employees of DHS: "If you are not prepared to take the action that needs to be taken, if you cannot keep up and stay on top of things, then you should leave this city government right now. - A man wanted for the murder of a four-year-old boy was arrested early this morning in Philadelphia.
- Yesterday federal prosecutors filed a list of 165 potential witnesses against state Senator Vincent Fumo, which includes various politically connected Philadelphians, as well as Fumo staffers, friends, and members of his inner circle.
- Two people were arrested Friday morning in University City for their part in a telephone identity theft scam.
- 200 box fans will be distributed this morning to those 55 and older at the Tioga branch of Philadelphia Senior Center on a first-come, first-served basis. Distribution will occur from 10AM to 12PM, or as long as the fans last.
- John McCain was speaking in Montgomery County yesterday when he called on Congress to return from its summer recess to deal with the nation's energy crisis.
- "An aggravated-assault charge was reinstated yesterday against Ronald Blount, the head of the Taxi Workers Alliance, stemming from a March incident in which he allegedly choked a woman who wanted to pay her fare with a credit card."
- Yesterday morning a pedestrian walking through Tacony Creek Park in the Juniata section found three beheaded chickens, one dead kitten, another cat close to death, and the skeletal remains of a dog scattered over a small area. Investigators were puzzled and shocked. "Two of the chickens were found hanging by their feet from a tree branch. Their heads had been carefully wrapped inside bandanas and stuffed back into their bodies."
