What's new and/or interesting in Philly theaters this weekend.
Elsa & Fred
Two aging Spanish widowers find their fading passion for romance unexpectedly rekindled during a visit to Rome's Trevi Fountain. That doesn't sound like our cup of tea, and the mixed reviews aren't exactly thrilling us. We'll stay away.

Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson
The guy who directed Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room (Alex Gibney) takes on Hunter S. Thompson—specifically, his life during the years 1965 through 1975—with the help of lots of never-before-seen archival materials. Naturally, Thompson's buddy Johnny Depp narrates. And even though he's just narrating, we'll see anything Depp is in! It helps that Thompson is a unique and totally fascinating character, and that the reviews are excellent.

Most Likely to Rule: Encounters at the End of the World
The latest documentary from visionary director Werner Herzog is another thoughtful, moving, dare we say revelatory film, this time centered on the fascinating people living in and around McMurdo Station on the South Pole. Again Herzog is focused on the extremes of humanity—odd people living on the edges of things. As you can probably tell, we've already seen this film, and we think it's fantastic.

Tell No One
A French thriller about a man whose wife was killed by a serial killer. Eight years afterward, he's just about got his life back together when he suddenly finds himself implicated in the murder of two people, and gets an email from the wife he thought was dead. He tries to figure out the secret behind the murders and his wife's reappearance while on the run from the law. Kristin Scott Thomas stars. Sounds cool, and the reviews are great. We're in!

Journey to the Center of the Earth
We're not fooled by the fact that this is based on a Jules Verne novel. Brendan Fraser is running around fighting monsters, so as far as we're concerned, this is just The Mummy without the mummy. If that's not enough for you, though, and you want a plot summary for some reason, in this one Fraser is pretending to be a science professor (pfft!) who ends up miles beneath the surface of the Earth and discovers strange new worlds and seemingly alien creatures. Probably it will just be a big, dumb, special effects extravaganza, but some screenings are also in 3D, so definitely catch one of those; that kind of extra could turn a dull action movie into an exciting event.

Most Likely to Suck: Meet Dave
Another in a long line of really awful-looking Eddie Murphy vehicles, this one sees Murphy himself actually playing a vehicle: a human spacecraft for a bunch of tiny humanoid aliens who head to Earth in the hopes of saving their doomed world. This is directed by Brian Robbins, who made Norbit, so if you didn't know yet that you should stay away, now you certainly do.

Hellboy II: The Golden Army
Although we love Hellboy as a character and as a comic book, we aren't a huge fan of the original film. It just seemed like your average, dull action movie to us, with all the usual corny lines and cliches. But we still really respect director Guillermo Del Toro, and the ads for this new film have made it look at the very least extremely impressive visually. Also, the reviews are very positive. So we're willing to give the big red guy another chance. Oh, and plotwise, it's about a new leader of the invisible realm who assembles a huge army of fantastic creatures to wage war on humanity. Of course, Hellboy (Ron Perlman), Liz (Selma Blair), Abe (Doug Jones), and new team member Johann (Thomas Kretschmann) will endeavor to stop him.

Inventos: Hip Hop Cubano
An independent film by young American Eli Jacobs-Fantauzzi that takes a look into the world of Cuban Hip Hop. This documentary follows their daily lives of writing, performing and discussing Cuban music, specifically Hip Hop, and then as they go to the States for the first time to record an album and perform. The screening will be accompanied by a live DJ set by DJ Rahsaan (Afrotaino Productions) and live artwork by El Toro. Sounds fun!

The Cousins
The International House continues its celebration of the Janus Collection, and celebrates Bastille Day, with a screening of Claude Chabrol's experimental 1959 film about a country cousin trying to make it in the big city and being destroyed in the process. That does not sound like fun, and French films from this period are not our favorite by a long shot. We'll pass.

Girls Rock! The Movie
A rockumentary about The Rock 'n' Roll Camp for Girls, a place where 8- to 18-year-olds come from all over the country to learn rock DIY-style. It follows campers and counselors as they build toward the big final performance for over 700 people, and tells its story through video diaries, verite footage, revealing interviews, and issue-driven animations. Described as a transformative, inspiring, empowering, rocking, tear-jerking film, this one sounds like a lot of fun.
