Follow Phillyist Updates on Twitter

Twitter is a free microblogging and social networking service. We are happy to announce the creation of our very own Twitter account: @Phillyist. Twitter is a free microblogging and social networking service. Users can update their status from the Twitter web site, popular instant messaging clients and SMS text messaging via mobile phone, not to mention a slew of third-party apps for various platforms. The purpose? Some would argue that Twitter and similar services like Jaiku only exacerbate an already intensifying addiction to "the grid." Phillyist isn't sure it's quite that sinister, so we've joined up to provide Twitter as one option of keeping yourself informed when we post a new story. We've set it up to send our headlines and a snippet of each post to Twitter when we update. Thanks to Annie Heckenberger, a Community Trailblazer at Red Tettemer, for taking the plunge and becoming our first follower! Feel free to leave your Twitter user name in the comments and join the conversation!

You can aim your tweets at me via @joeross.

Just started a Twitter profile myself. Follow me at http://twitter.com/canarymegan

I'm drawing the line. I refuse to join Twitter. I already think there's too much connectivity in my life. :-)

I'm inclined to agree with my boyfriend, but as a Phillyist editor, I guess I just have to suck it up. Can I set my preferences so that I don't get messages (tweets?) at night or on weekends?

Jill,

You can set "quiet hours" on SMS updates. For instance, I'm always checking via the web at work, so I set quiet hours from 9AM to 6PM. But I actually tend to keep SMS updates shut off much of the time, since I am always migrating between computers. You can always turn SMS on by just texting "on" to Twitter, and turn them off by texting "off". So, it's pretty easy to keep the tweets at bay when necessary.

Wow. This is... even more complicated than I thought it was going to be!

Anybody want to set up my Twitter account FOR me? ;)

I will do so if you wish. It is your editorial privilege to have a Twitter account handed to you on a silver platter. I shall be lurking in Gmail, awaiting further communication.
