Christmas Halloween in July
Generally, we don't listen to the Jimmy Buffett or The Beach Boys in January. We don't listen to the Charlie Brown Christmas album in the summer. (Although, Eric Hutchinson would probably disagree with us.) And normally, we don't really listen to Type O Negative (MySpace) except for roughly a month before and after Halloween. We've seen them twice before on Halloween night, or the night before Halloween, and we believe that time of the year fits their music perfectly. But we also thoroughly believe that rigid adherence to most rules is unhealthy, so we're willing to bend a bit if the right opportunity presents itself.
Type O Negative is currently headlining the Jägermeister Music Tour which hits The Troc tomorrow night. When we heard about the show, it occurred to us that we hadn't actually listened to Type O Negative—who was one of our favorite bands "back in the day"—in quite some time. So we popped the band's 1996 album October Rust into our CD player, and our first thought was, "Why has it been so long since we last listened to this?" Type O's brand of goth is surprisingly listenable, even to the non-metal fan, without being too accessible. There's even humor to be found, in tracks like "My Girlfriend's Girlfriend." The world needs more groups like Type O Negative: groups that are true to their genre while not taking themselves too seriously and being willing to have some fun, even when their fans aren't really in on the joke—which, based on this Phillyist's experience, many of Type O's fans aren't.
One word of caution about tomorrow night's show. One of the supporting acts is Wednesday 13, who we saw last year on a bill with Fair to Midland, and they were absolutely unbearable. If you don't happen to make it with to The Troc right when the doors open, fear not—you're not missing much.
