Asshole of the Week
It's bargain day here at Phillyist, so we're bringing you a two-for-the-price of one Asshole of the Week. (Actually, we missed last week, but this week's column gives us two Assholes, so we figure it evens out.)
When in doubt, count on Philadelphia's gun problem to give us a bona fide Asshole. This week, the Supreme Court handed down its Heller decision holding that the Second Amendment gives individuals the right to own a firearm. That should be music to Asshole Andre Moore's ears. A few weeks ago, Moore (who we suspect had thoroughly considered the legal positions at issue in Heller and knew how the Supreme Court would rule) decided to celebrate his Second Amendment right by posting a video on YouTube encouraging people to shoot Philadelphia cops. Moore was arrested this week and charged with aggravated assault, making terroristic threats, and other crimes.
We're a city that has lost a number of officers in recent months. Cops are likely on high-alert right now, and rightfully so. The sheer stupidity of Moore's rant at this time, in this place, blows the mind. We're not sure whether he would actually try to shoot a cop, or whether he just thinks it's cool when other lowlifes do. But we suspect that, if Moore isn't convicted, he going to somehow get himself shot, either by a cop, or by someone he pulls a gun on who happens to be packing too. Call us crazy, but if it happens, we won't be mourning him.
Our bonus Assholes this week are the government authorities involved in Moore's case. They apparently haven't heard of the First Amendment. The Constitution doesn't protect terroristic threats, but we don't think these were. The government is saying that Moore's rant included terroristic threats because they were instructions on how to shoot and kill a cop. Moore had said that, to kill a cop, you have to put a bullet in your gun and shoot the officer in the head or heart. We kind of think that should be filed under, "Duh." If someone needs those kinds of instructions, they're probably more likely to accidentally shoot themselves than an officer. Moore's comments are absolutely repulsive, but they're not terroristic threats so much as they are the mere ravings of a complete and utter moron. (We also have no idea where the aggravated assault charge came from.)
So, for just creating a whole mess of a story all the way around, our Assholes of the Week are everyone involved in the Andre Moore case.
