Yo, Philly in the News

SEPTA

  • The Inquirer profiles a Germantown clinic whose services are described as indispensable, but which may shut down soon due to a lack of funds.
  • Suspended Episcopal Bishop Charles E. Bennison Jr. testified yesterday in his ecclesiastical trial, trying to explain why he had not told anyone that his brother was sexually abusing a high-school student in the 1970s.
  • A preliminary hearing was held yesterday for the five North Philadelphia teens arrested in the beating and subsequent death of Sean Patrick Conroy on a SEPTA platform in March. Statements by the teens that were read in court yesterday tell conflicting stories of what happened and why. The judge has ordered them to stand trial on charges of third-degree murder and conspiracy.
  • It's a bit disturbing that this reminder of violence on a SEPTA platform comes at the same time that SEPTA police are preparing to strike. Last ditch negotiations broke off last night, and the 200 unionized police officers will strike at 2PM today if no agreement is reached before then. In the event of a strike, SEPTA will make use of supervisors, Philadelphia police, and private security guards to patrol stations and concourses.
  • U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy (D., Pa.) amended a funding bill yesterday to force Amtrak to consider increasing stops and lowering fares for riders using Bucks County's only Amtrak station. The idea is to help his Bucks County constituents who work in New York and who are struggling with clogged highways and high gas prices.
  • A House committee will hear testimony on proposed changes to the state dog law today.
  • "The city teachers' union is balking at a school district proposal that teachers and other school employees work longer days starting this fall."
  • Lower Makefield Township police say a 38-year-old woman sexually abused two teen boys, one 14 and one 15, at a sleepover. Police also say the 45-year-old woman who owns the Bucks County home where the sleepover took place was complicit in the sexual abuse, and both women have been arrested.
