On Your Toes: Philly Dance This Week

You’ll have to wait until the end of the week to catch these babies, but trust us: they’re worth it.

Crazy-ass acrobats/dancers/athletes of the highest order Pilobolus are coming to the Annenberg for four performances, the first Thursday night at 7:30PM. The troupe uses costumes, props, and intense aerial work coupled with some traditional dance moves to create spectacles unlike any you’ve probably seen before, at least on a “dance” stage. (In case you’re wondering, a pilobolus is “a phototropic zygomycete—a sun-loving fungus that grows in barnyards and pastures.” Now you know.)

Annenberg Center (3680 Walnut St)
Thursday 7:30PM
Friday 8PM
Saturday 2PM & 8PM
$32-$46

Moving Research, brainchild of dancer and “all around movement geek” Meg Foley, presents a new work “slip” this weekend at Phillyist favorite Studio34 (they really premiered last week, but shhh!). MR is meant to be a collaborative process focused on experiential and movement-based work, and slip was choreographed not just by Foley, but also by the dancers: Megan Bridge, Alison D’Amato, Devynn Emory, Erin Foreman-Murray, Michele Tantoco, and Christina Zani. It’s a great space to see such a work in, too.

The fun never stops at Johnny Brenda’s, nor at any performance at Mascher. Put them together and it’s a sure bet. Funstival is a fundraiser for Mascher Space Coop hosted by Shawn Kilroy and featuring cabaret-type performances by PIMA Group (who are promising a cheerleading routine), Megan Bridge, map dance collective, and Christina Zani and Devynn Emory, among others. New Extreme Dance Explosions Awesomes with Rebecca Patek and Allison Lorenzen promise a piece entitled “The Princess and the Vagicorn.” Yeah, we think that’s what they mean. Anyway, dance + good cause = Funstival.

Friday 10PM-2AM
$10

Feel like investigating layers of consciousness? Then head over to the CEC Meetinghouse Theater for Ausdruckstanz Dance//Imprints in Motion as they premiere choreographer and director Brigitta Herrmann’s "Physiognomy of the Spirit," which reintroduces "the concept of a dance/movement choir," and features an intergenerational group with teens through women of a certain age. Reservations are recommended for this one, so pick your performance(s) now.

Merián Soto presents another of her awesome-cool Wissahickon Park Projects on Sunday morning on Forbidden Drive to Mt. Airy Avenue. This time the theme is Fairy Day. We’re not a hundred percent how the theme will be played out, but you can bet there’ll be branches.
