Yo, Philly in the News

Philly

  • Eric DeShawn Floyd, the third suspect in the murder of police Sgt. Stephen Liczbinski, was arrested last night when he was found sleeping in a boarded up rowhouse in Southwest Philadelphia at 11:10PM. He was unarmed and offered no resistance. Philadelphia police thus met their goal of capturing Floyd before Liczbinski's funeral. Meanwhile, the leadership of the Germantown Masjid has refused to conduct funeral services for Howard Cain, the bank robber who actually killed Liczbinski. The managing director of the mosque said, "We don't want one slight scintilla hinting that we condone his behavior." In related news, as part of National Police Week (which runs from May 11-17) Pennsylvania State Police patrol cars will have blue ribbons tied to the left rear door handles to honor law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty.
  • Oprah Winfrey was scheduled to make a pitch for tougher dog laws in Pennsylvania on her talk show yesterday, but ran out of time. The pitch was to include her reading excerpts from a letter Gov. Rendell sent her last month seeking support for legislation he's pushing to overhaul Pennsylvania's dog law to prevent abuses in puppy mills. Oprah tentatively plans to address the issue later this month.
  • Pennsylvania's Agriculture Department announced Tuesday that it would be spending an additional $20,000 researching what's behind the mysterious ailment plaguing honey bees.
  • A Philadelphia police sergeant and five officers have been removed from street duty in connection with Monday night's violent arrest of three shooting suspects, which was captured on camera by a Fox 29 news helicopter; you can view the video here or on our daily video coming up later this morning.
  • 24-year-old drywall finisher Thomas Booth drowned in January in a creek behind Bootlegger's Bar in Ridley Township. A piece of graffiti found nearby that looks like a smiley face now has some wondering whether Booth's death may have been the work of a network of serial killers that two former New York City detectives believe is responsible for at least 40 similar deaths spanning more than a decade.
  • Jerry Lazaroff, 59, of Radnor, a clinical psychologist for Delaware County Juvenile Court, was suspended without pay yesterday amid allegations that he had assaulted a 10-year-old girl during therapy sessions at his private office.
