We at Phillyist love animals. We check I Can Has Cheezburger daily, we frequently go to restaurants in Fairmount just so we have an excuse to stop and look at the kitties in the window at Fairmount Pet Shoppe, and we cried at the tragic end to Saturday's Kentucky Derby. A couple months ago, when we were liveblogging the Barking Beauty pageant, we met some of the good folks from Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society, better known as PAWS, who share our love of animals. Our new friends will be having a big event in Manayunk on Saturday called PAWS on Main, which we'll tell you more about later in the week.
But to the matter at hand... As you may know, kitten season is now underway. When most people hear the words "kitten season," they think, "Yay! We can now go to a shelter and save a cute, cuddly little kitten!" But kitten season has a very unfortunate side effect: many very loving and very adoptable adult cats never make it out of shelters because adopters gravitate towards the itty bitty kittens. And these would-be pets never get a chance to be the loving companions that they can, and want, to be. From personal experience, we can tell you that two cats are better than one, so if you really, really feel that you must have a kitten, by all means, adopt one, but get that kitten a friend, and save the life of one of these slightly older, but still young, animals. So each morning this week, we'll be tell you about an adoptable cat who can't wait to come home with you. (And if cats aren't your thing, fear not, because we'll be telling you about some wonderful dogs each afternoon this week, so stay tuned.) Today's PAWS Cat of the Day is...
Crunchy (A# 04410376)
Crunchy is a playful girl, and she's under a year old. She loves string, coins, and pretty much anything else she can get her mitts on. She's a little shy at first, but opens up quickly, and is a real snuggler.
Crunchy has caught a bit of a cold at the shelter, and is marked as "Urgent," meaning she must be adopted very soon. Crunchy needs a safe home where she can recover. (And helping her recover just involves administering some medicine, which PAWS will provide, each morning and evening until she's better.)
If you'd like to save Crunchy, e-mail natalie@phillypaws.org. The adoption fee for a PAWS cat is $40, which includes your new friend's first FVRCP vaccination and rabies vaccination, spaying/neutering, and microchipping. Also, make note of the shelter number (the "A#" above) and bring it with you when you go to the PAWS shelter, which is located at 111 West Hunting Park Ave (map).
