There is a debate on the best way to combat HIV/AIDS. Researchers are developing new treatments and possibly an HIV vaccine. What about those of us who gave up on our chemistry doctorate degrees after eleventh grade? Should we focus our efforts on better awareness campaigns? More accessible testing? Stronger policies? Why not fight HIV with a fork? You read right.
Go out for dinner on May 1st. We know, it’s a Thursday night; you might have to miss Lost. But why pass up the chance to have 33% of the bill go to people affected by HIV? It’s like getting a huge discount on your meal, and then feeling so overwhelmed with gratitude that you give the difference to a good cause. What episode could be a better experience than that?
This year marks the 18th annual Dining Out For Life in Philadelphia, sponsored by Action AIDS. It typically raises over three million dollars a year, which goes towards those living with the virus. On top of the 33% of proceeds automatically donated, when you give an extra $25, you get a card that entitles you to 20% off your bill on Tuesdays at dozens of local restaurants. Yes, we know that’s Law and Order night...
If you aren’t philanthropically satiated after your meal, there are a lot of other ways to get involved in Philadelphia’s fight against HIV. For example, it’s not too late to get involved in planning for AIDS Education Month. For all of June, AEM hosts events around the state of HIV citywide. No utensils necessary.
But first thing’s first: make a reservation.
