B-52s Set to Bomb[ard] The Electric Factory
Of course you do. They're probably best known for their fifth album, 1989's Cosmic Thing, featuring the singles "Roam" and "Love Shack" (whose video helped to introduce the wider world to Ru Paul). Well, nearly twenty years after their most successful release (god, we're old), and sixteen years since their last studio album, The B-52s are back with Funplex. The album proves that they haven't lost any of their quirky spunk on their long hiatus, and the lyrics read like a sexy, campy throwback to the eighties—more specifically, to eighties pop culture's visions of the future. (They'd be utterly ridiculous if intoned by anyone else but Fred Schneider, but in the context, it's clear that The B-52s still have their tongues firmly planted in their cheeks.)
Not only does the band have the new album out, but they're also on tour, and tonight, The B-52s stop in our fair city. Originally slated for the TLA, the show sold out so quickly that it had to be moved to The Electric Factory to accommodate the demand. Expect tons of loyal fans who know the band's entire discography, along with everyone who only showed up to hear them play "Love Shack" or "Rock Lobster." There might even be some costumes—we hear that's a thing that people do at the band's shows.
Joining The B-52s onstage will be Eagle Seagull (MySpace), the Nebraska-based indie band whose name would probably have earned them a spot on The B-52s' tour, even if their music wasn't as rocking as we believe it to be from the four songs we've heard on their MySpace page. They're not a perfect musical complement to the headliners, but they have the kind of New Wave throwback sound that means things shouldn't be nearly as incongruous as some of the other line-ups we've seen at The Factory.
