Weekend Sports Roundup

Phanatic

Friday
The much-ballyhooed match-up between Cole Hamels and Johan Santana took place at a sold-out Citizens Bank Park. Santana baffled the Phils bats, fanning 10, and David Wright went 4-4 with 2 RBI’s as the Mets nipped the Phils 6-4.

The Good - Greg Dobbs’ pinch-hit, three-run homer brought the Phillies to within a run in the bottom of the eighth. Santana may have had an answer for the Phils offense, but he only pitches every five days and we still own their bullpen.

The Bad - Jose Reyes slid headfirst into Chase Utley’s knee and remained on the ground for several minutes while fans booed the Oscar-worthy performance. Mets closer and social commentator Billy Wagner was quick to scold fans about their role in the upcoming apocalypse.

The Ugly - The Linc parking was in mid-season form in early Spring, complete with five-dollar nitrous balloons, shirtless drunken brawls and Club Risque strippers soliciting in hot pants. Bonus points go to the drunk guy who left his even drunker friend (on crutches and a walking boot) passed out on the curb as the last car pulled out. We hope he wasn’t sucked up by the street sweepers.

Saturday
An uninspired day for Philadelphia sports. The Mets downed the Phillies 4-2 in a late afternoon matinee as the Flyers failed to close out their first round series with the Capitals down in Washington, losing 3-2.

The Good - Not much. Flyers fans that made the trek down to D.C. didn’t run into much weekend traffic on I-95?

The Bad - Without Jimmy Rollins in the lineup, the Phils offense seems lost. At least the hobbled MVP has been available to pinch hit as he rehabs his ankle.

The Ugly - So much for that; Rollins grounded out as a pinch hitter on Saturday, aggravating his sprained ankle and earning a spot on the 15-day disabled list.

Sunday
Redemption for the city of brotherly love, as the Sixers shocked the Detroit Pistons 90-86 in the opening game of their first round series. The Phillies salvaged a victory from their three game set with the Mets, winning 5-4 in a nationally televised ESPN game.

The Good - The Sixers won, despite being down as many as 15 points, despite sub-par efforts from both Andre Iguodala and Samuel Dalembert and despite the fact that not even Mo Cheeks’ mom expects them to win more than a game. J-Roll’s fill-in Eric Bruntlett made a Rollins-esque diving stab and throw to seal the Phils victory, giving him at least one week of immunity from fans booing his every at bat.

The Bad - It seems like Chase Utley is the only Phillie whose bat is in working order lately. The All-Star second baseman smacked two home runs last night, driving in four of the Phillies’ five runs.

The Ugly - Three words: Reggie Evans’ game. We mean ugly as an endearing quality, like a pug or America Ferrera. Whether it’s going over the back to secure a big rebound, taking a charge or grabbing Chris Kaman’s junk, Reg’s hustle and tenacity is quickly earning him a spot in Philadelphia sports lore.
