Yo, Philly in the News

Philly

  • In reaction to that AP series last month revealing that Philadelphia ranked first among 24 metropolitan areas reporting traces of an assortment of drugs in its water supply, today the City Council's committees on health and human services and the environment will examine the Water Department's data on the subject.
  • Hopefully you're already aware that tomorrow is Tax Day. If not, you'd better get to work! Regardless, a warning: "According to a recent study by nonprofit groups in Philadelphia, a significant number of commercial preparers still are scamming customers into accepting costly refund-anticipation loans."
  • "The new $103 million Gettysburg Museum and Visitor Center opens today at Gettysburg National Military Park."
  • It's a crime to transport liquor over the Pennsylvania state border, but the Inquirer points out that the law is rarely enforced, partially because doing so would be labor intensive.
  • The Philadelphia Police Department began preparing officers last week to take part in helping to keep Mayor Nutter's promise to step up stop-and-frisk tactics to help rid the streets of illegal weapons. Meanwhile, the Daily News takes a look at how Nutter is doing on crime in general; the conclusion seems to be that he's moving in the right direction but still has a long way to go.
  • Your daily presidential primary updates: the Daily News takes a look at why Obama hasn't visited any of Philadelphia's black neighborhoods yet (he says it's because his support is strong there, and he wants to go where he's weak). Meanwhile, Obama is going on the offensive against Clinton after a bit of controversy over recently calling small-town Pennsylvanians "bitter." Finally, both candidates addressed the role of faith in their lives and in the presidency at a forum devoted to social and moral issues at a Christian college in Pennsylvania last night.
  • SEPTA's 46th Street El Station is scheduled to reopen today after closing for redesign and reconstruction way back in June 2007. Upgrades include many new security features, like "curved and reflective walls that eliminate blind corners, visible and brightly lit interior and exterior station areas, and a pedestrian underpass to allow safe passenger travel above Market Street between both platforms."
