Hori Smoku Sailor Jerry
This had the potential to be a really good film. Not amazing or earth-shattering, but really good. It's about a legendary tattoo artist and the art form he revolutionized, and it features interviews and commentary from other heavy hitters in the industry, including local ink slinger Philadelphia Eddie.
However, since I couldn't even hear half of what went on in the film thanks to all the people in the audience who would not shut the fuck up, it's hard to say if the film lived up to its potential. Maybe it was all that Sailor Jerry Rum they drank at the pre-party. I seriously considered just walking out, but I ended up taking a nap instead. No, I am not kidding.
Also, memo to drunken hipsters: this film was about Sailor Jerry, not Philadelphia Eddie. Perhaps the title might have tipped you off to this.
I do hope this gets picked up for distribution. I'm not sure I'd make another go at it in the theater, but I'd certainly watch it on DVD. As a history of tattooing, it's far from complete, but it's an important piece of the bigger picture.
Festival rating: film, good (at least the part I was awake for and could hear); the crowd, not so much
