Phillyist VIP: Joe Fritz
This week's Very Important Philadelphian is Joe Fritz. Joe lives in Passyunk Square and is a Web Product Designer for Transmogrify. He also moonlights as a DJ. Catch Joe (aka Gordon Bombay) on the first Saturday of each month at the Raven Lounge or every third Thursday at The Khyber.
How long have you lived in Philadelphia and what brought you here?
Going on 5 years now I think... I moved here for school, my last year, actually. I wanted to make the school/work/location combination more convenient, and for about a year it was!
What is your favorite place in the city?
Most definitely E. Passyunk. It's like going back in time down there. It's clean and quiet, and has a lot of nice "gems" like Beautiful World (awesome records) and Marra's (awesome food). The Cantina is a nice addition too. Someday I'll live there.
What is the strangest thing that has happened to you in Philadelphia?
This is a hard one. I've lived a pretty uneventful life here, despite weird stuff happening to everyone else I know. It's probably when someone set a truck on fire 20 feet from my house when I was living in Mantua. It wasn't too bad until the fire hit the gas tank and exploded.
If you could change one thing about the City of Philadelphia, what would it be?
Besides making Geno's put in some bathrooms somewhere... I think the business privilege tax would be a nice thing to get rid of, but I know Nutter is talking about it. Also maybe some street cleaning outside of Center City. I guess that's three things.
Rocky Balboa or Benjamin Franklin?
Until Ben Franklin makes a 6-part movie series where he has a robot butler, training montages, fights Hulk Hogan, and ends the Cold War, I'll have to side with Rocky. It's a true rags-to-riches-to-rags-to-riches-to-contented rags story. (On a side note, this writer would like to recognize Mr. Fritz as the first VIP to choose Rocky. It's about time!)
