Can't Miss This!

Tonight we managed to slip in a cheap event that doesn't include alcohol. Yeah, we were proud of us, too. There's a little something for everyone tonight and the weather is warming up. So get out and have fun before the rains come pouring down later in the week. We're not weatherpersons, but we think it's a silly word. "Weatherpersons."

sake4TH ANNUAL SAKE FEST
Today we continue our tradition of bringing you expensive events involving alcohol. The difference is that today we toss in a dose of cultural diversity. Alcohol is not all Irish whiskey and Russian vodka, French wine and Italian, um, wine. No, you mustn't forget about the Japanese delicacy that is sake. It's not the only kind of rice wine in the world, but it's the one you can sample to your heart's content (or your liver's dismay) tonight at the Loews Hotel. This event is part of the Cherry Blossom Festival of Greater Philadelphia.
WHO: 21+ baby! Sorry. We shouldn't have called you "baby." That was crossing the line. Blame it on the sake.
WHERE: The Loews hotel, 12th and Market Streets (map)
WHEN: From 6pm to 8:30pm
HOW MUCH: $65 at the door. No more advance tickets. Boo hoo. Complain to the organizers.

VOICES OF FREEDOM: CONTESTING CIVIL LIBERTIES DURING WARTIME
Sometimes, during wartime, freedom of expression has been challenged and presented a struggle for those involved in the conflict. Actors will do dramatic readings and those will be followed by a discussion about the connections of the material and the ideas it addresses to our own time. We're not exactly sure where these difficulties with freedom of expression during wartime came into play, but we're not the historians. They are.
WHO: Anyone!
WHERE: The Historical Society of Pennsylvania, 13th and Locust Streets (map)
WHEN: 6pm
HOW MUCH: $6 for non-members, $3 for students. RSVP at 215-732-6200 ext. 412 or events@hsp.org.

MARTINIS AND MANICURES
It sounds weird. But it's a weekly event, so the two must be a better pair than they initially sound. Thread Beauty Bar apparently makes a habit of this sort of thing. PhillyMag called them a "chic, walk-up quick-service boutique day spa." It's less than a month old and was opened by a local business student. Oh, and don't forget about the "natural nail care with vegan + chemical free nail polish." No appointment necessary and enjoy the martinis!
WHO: Anyone can grab a mani or a pedi, but we're guessing it's 21+ to drink and pamper.
WHERE: Thread Beauty Bar, 19th and Chestnut Streets (map)
WHEN: From 5pm to 9pm
HOW MUCH: Cost for services and drinks. No cover though.
