Mike Doughty’s Band at the TLA: Making Sense Out of the Nonsense
Two new writers join us today. The first of them, Melissa Watts, is a versatile writer with experience ranging from marketing to journalism, but that's not the only thing that won us over. We were really sold when she told us: "I love Phillyist. My work day doesn't start right without it." Flattery will get you everywhere, folks—including a spot on the staff. Welcome, Melissa!
Who doesn’t like a few “na na naas” or “da da daas” thrown into their favorite pop song? If you do, check out Mike Doughty’s Band at the TLA on Friday with The Panderers in support of Doughty’s sophomore album Golden Delicious. In addition to the seemingly endless stream of "na na naas," you might not always know what Doughty’s talking about with lyrics like “more bacon than the pan can handle" and "you should blast Young Jeezy with your friends in a parking lot." But, don’t let Doughty’s fun, head-bopping songs fool you: there’s real emotion there. Especially in songs off his new album like "Wednesday (Contra La Puerta)" and "I Got the Drop on You" where you can hear his vocals and mournful lyrics shine. Still need another reason to see Doughty’s Band? Doughty was the lead singer of Soul Coughing—an alternative rock band popular in the 1990s. For those fans, Doughty is bringing back some oldies but goodies for this tour.
