Yo, Philly in the News

philly03-31-08.jpg

  • Mantua Hall at 35th and Fairmount, one of the original 40 high-rise public housing towers built as part of the city's urban-renewal era, was imploded this weekend. It was the 21st such tower that the Philadelphia Housing Authority has imploded since 1995. The end of the building is considered a new beginning for Mantua. But the scandal involving the Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Philadelphia Housing Authority could lead to the flow of money for building low-rise public housing in Philadelphia being stopped cold as early as tomorrow.
  • Who will really decide the outcome of Pennsylvania's April 22nd primary: the voters, or the delegates? Perhaps the real answer is the gays! Meanwhile, Obama had fun with the college crowd at Penn State.
  • Gun control legislation which would require reporting handguns that are lost or stolen is being pushed hard by Democrats in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, and now nine Philadelphia-area Republicans are saying they will break ranks with their caucus and support the legislation when the state House of Representatives resumes debate on it today.
  • Three adults and a toddler were found dead in a Chester City apartment Saturday night, and none of the bodies had obvious wounds or signs of trauma. Investigators have rejected the idea that carbon monoxide poisoning is to blame. The Delaware County Medical Examiner's Office is expected to release the autopsy results of the four people today.
  • Due to the recent tragic death of Sean Patrick Conroy in a SEPTA subway concourse, the international, all-volunteer civic safety organization known as The Guardian Angels will begin patrolling the heaviest routes on the Market-Frankford and Broad Street lines from 1 to 5PM. Those are the hours that, according to Philadelphia riders, are the most fearful. Members from the Angels' New York City branch will come down to assist members of the local branch for these patrols.
  • A vehicle possibly belonging to the hit-and-run driver who killed 15-year-old Mary Otto in the city's Lexington Park section on Friday has been found in the parking lot of a city prison.
