Yo, Philly in the News

Our Bama

  • Interim Philadelphia schools chief Tom Brady will be heading to Providence, R.I. in early June to become superintendent there.
  • The Liberty City Lesbian and Gay Democratic Club is endorsing Larry Farnese for the Pennsylvania state Senate, and Hillary Clinton for president. The club will also co-sponsor a presidential forum at 7:45 p.m. tomorrow at Woody's. Clinton's representative at the forum will be her daughter Chelsea, while Obama has Melissa Etheridge conference calling in on his behalf. Heh. That sounds awesome. In other primary event news, Amber Lee Ettinger of Hazleton, PA, known as the Obama Girl for her music video on YouTube wherein she confesses she has a crush on the candidate, will appear, and possibly perform, at an invitation-only "primary party" at a downtown Harrisburg nightspot Monday.
  • In other, non-party-related primary news: Monday night there were long lines at county election boards across the state, as voters rushed to meet the deadline for registering to vote in Pennsylvania's April 22 primary. Mayor Nutter is hoping to get presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama to Philadelphia for a public discussion of urban issues before the primary. Clinton says she would participate, but a spokesman for Obama couldn't confirm whether he'd be able to fit it into his schedule.
  • The Williamson Free School of Mechanical Trades outside of Media announced yesterday that it would be receiving a $45 million donation from two of the region's most generous philanthropic couples—metals entrepreneur Henry Rowan and his wife, Lee, of Langhorne, Bucks County, and former cable television magnate H. FitzGerald "Gerry" Lenfest and his wife, Marguerite, of Philadelphia.
  • A K-9 officer at the George W. Hill Correctional Facility in Delaware County was charged yesterday with multiple counts of institutional sexual assault for allegedly having sex with an inmate. (Sexual relations with an inmate is always considered institutional sexual assault, even if the sex is consensual.) And indeed, the accused has admitted to having oral and vaginal sex with the female work-release inmate. Apparently he would pick her up from her job at McDonald's and take her to the historic Newlin Grist Mill near the prison or to the parking lot of the Springfield Mall for sex in his pickup truck. Well, at least he didn't take her to TGI Friday's...
  • Last Wednesday at about 7:45PM a 68-year-old man was crossing Fox Street near the Roosevelt Expressway when he was struck by a hit-and-run driver in what might have been a silver Chrysler Concorde. The man died from his injuries Sunday morning at Temple University Hospital. Police are seeking the public's help in locating the car; anyone with information on the accident can call investigators at 215-685-3180, -3181, or the TIP line at 215-686-TIPS.
