Can't Miss This!

Yet another Christian holiday comes to pass on this bright and sunny day. Today is Good Friday. It marks the day Jesus suffered and died for the sins of humanity. But look at that face—He doesn't let it get Him down! It's Good Friday because He knew how much Friday would always mean to us, and asked His publicist to put a good spin on the otherwise gloomy fact that He died today. The Holy Spirit, who we all know is Jesus' publicist, among other sacred roles in the family, came back with the idea that His eventual return to the world of the living negated the need to call it "Really Incredibly Depressing Day That God's Son Died" Friday. Which is good, because we can only imagine how difficult that would be to say in Latin.

JesusBONG HITS FOR JESUS
We'll continue the trend of cheeky, well-meaning, but slightly heretical references to the season by mentioning that Bong Hits For Jesus is playing at the Troc tonight. Joseph Frederick first saw the phrase on a snowboarding sticker, and now it comes to the Troc on a Christian holy day, writ large and amped up. There are several other bands in attendance, as well, including Sounds From Atlantis, Red Stahr Road, Dynamo, Avastion, and Consider This. We're not making any promises as to quality, but it never hurts to get out and mingle with local musicians. They're a surprisingly friendly lot and the Troc is a good place for a big local-roster show.

WHERE: The Trocadero, 10th and Arch Streets (map)
WHEN: Doors @ 6:30pm
HOW MUCH: $15. Get 'em here. They're also available at the Troc's own box office until 6pm.

DR. MICHIO KAKU: THE PHYSICS OF THE IMPOSSIBLE
This one is for the nerds. The broke-ass nerds, to be exact. Kaku is a well-known scientist, author and nerd of the highest order. Also, he may be the oldest person on earth with a completely legitimate MySpace account. Tonight he discusses and signs copies of his new book, The Physics of the Impossible (the front cover appears to show phone booths flitting back and forth between realities, a la Doctor Who or Bill and Ted). It traces, in classic sci-fi fashion but with very non-fiction sorts of arguments, the path of current technology, in all its amazing splendor, deep into the future. Everyone who attends will receive a free sense of wonderment at the scope of existence.
WHO: Anyone!
WHERE: Franklin Theater @ The Franklin Institute, 222 North 20th Street (map)
WHEN: 7:30pm
HOW MUCH: Free. But registration is required, so call (215) 448-1254.

DJ JAZZY JEFF AT FLUID NIGHTCLUB
We both know you miss The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, so why not go party with the man himself, DJ Jazzy Jeff? Not only was he the ultimate wing man to Will Smith, he was also "one of the pioneers to use a brand new technology to power his [web] site." What else is there to say?
WHO: 21+
WHERE: Fluid Nightclub, 4th Street, between South and Bainbridge Streets (map)
WHEN: Doors @ 9pm.
HOW MUCH: Free before 10pm; $5 after 10pm if you're on the guest list—get on it here. If you haven't signed up for the guest list by 8pm, and you show up after 10pm, it's $10 at the door.
