Can't Miss This!
Holy Thursday, Batman! No, seriously, today is a sacred day for Christians everywhere. For many of us who aren't terribly religious, it's the new Friday! If you don't have off tomorrow, though, that doesn't mean you have to stay in and play the martyr card. Get out just to spite us, lucky havers-of-tomorrow-off.
THE MERCHANT OF VENICE
Yes, you've seen it before. Maybe you even read it. But at the very least, anybody who went to high school or college has at least borrowed the SparkNotes at some point in life. Shakespeare's story hasn't changed, but the players have, and that can often make all the difference. Temple Theaters is offering the tale until the 29th. It isn't Broadway, but it ain't SparkNotes, either.

If you don't know who she is, go buy a clue. hooks has been dissecting race and gender as literary and cultural paradigms since she began teaching in 1976. In the past 30 years, she has amassed a large and impressive body of work that examines feminism, the fight for racial equality and reconciliation and the primacy of the work over its author. She is Distinguished Professor in Residence at Berea College. Anyone serious about the study of literature, cultures, or the human condition in general would be wise to attend this lecture. Presented by UPenn's Center for Africana Studies, it is open to the public. Do not tell us that 5pm is too early. Tell your boss you're going to see an intellectual juggernaut and cultural prophet. If they turn their head sideways, like a confused puppy, just say you're going to go increase your brain by three sizes and you'll see them later. If they give you any crap, tell them Phillyist said it was okay.

POUNDING NAILS IN THE FLOOR WITH MY FOREHEAD
This one warranted inclusion simply by virtue of the title, and it's being held at Fergie's. It's a collection of monologues written by Eric Bogosian and directed by Karen DiLossi of the Madhouse Theater Company. Six actors tackle six monologues, while you sit and drink and laugh and remember all those times we said there were lots of people in this city more talented than you, then remember how mad that made you, then, finally, remember how right we were. And are. Don't worry, we share your pain. Well, on second thought, we're pretty confident over here at Phillyist. Yeah, we're pretty great.
