Whiz of the Web: Wednesday Whiz-Up
The best of the internet, squirted out in flavorful neon globules, just for you.

- The Raconteurs just announced that they're releasing a brand new album on March 25th. It's called Consolers of the Lonely, and plenty more info about it and its release can be found on the news section of the Raconteurs' official website. They say they're skipping out on the usual months of promotion in order to get the album out to everybody as quickly as possible and all at the same time. We love that everybody keeps experimenting with how music is released. Looking forward to the album!
- We have yet another bit of sad news to pass along today: Arthur C. Clarke has died in Sri Lanka at the age of 90.
- It's come out that during the strike Joss Whedon started writing "a musical intended as a limited internet series, 3 episodes of approximately 10 minutes each." He managed to get some interest in the project and started filming this week. It's called Dr. Horrible's Sing-a-long Blog, and is about a low-rent super-villain trying to deal with the hero who keeps beating him up, and the cute girl at the laundromat that he's too shy to talk to. It star Neil Patrick Harris as the titular character, Nathan Fillion as Captain Hammer (probably the hero), and Felicia Day as Penny (probably the cute girl). Sounds awesome to us!
- The Justice League movie apparently finally has a title—the seriously awful Justice League Mortal. Ugh. Meanwhile, the film is in trouble again, this time because the government of Australia (where they're trying to film) is refusing to give the production the new 40% tax rebate.
- Joystiq has gameplay footage of Mario Kart Wii, both with and without the Wii Wheel controller.
- The Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition recorded the "The Largest Gathering of Games Characters" (cosplayers) at the Millennium Bridge in London yesterday morning. This is the first time they recorded such a record, so the number didn't have to be very high (in this case, there were 80 nerds present).
- Anton Yelchin, who's going to play Chekov in the upcoming Star Trek film, is now in negotiations to star as Kyle Reese in Terminator 4. He's going to be a huge star among geeks.
- Sci Fi Channel just turned on the green light for Caprica, a two-hour pilot for a Battlestar Galactica prequel series set 50 years before the events of that show, and following the families of the Greystones and the Adamas "as they grow, compete and thrive in the vibrant world of the 12 Colonies."

- This is funny. That is all.
- You can watch the first 10 minutes of the World of Warcraft machinima MMOvie right here. We give it a thumbs up; it's quite funny.
- The first collaboration between Jackie Chan and Jet Li, The Forbidden Kingdom, is coming out soon (you can catch a preview screening at the Philadelphia Film Festival), but apparently the two liked working together so much, they’re already planning on doing another film together.
- The trailer for Tropic Thunder makes the movie look pretty dumb, and even offensive. But we have to admit, we did laugh a number of times...
- Can you identify classic rock songs when their lyrics are alphabetized? Find out here.
- This Phillyist does indeed suck at Photoshop, so one of these days I just might have to check out this (apparently profanity-laden) series of tutorials called You Suck at Photoshop. (Via)
- Download Squad has found yet another handy, though simplistic, program for us: Breakaway. It automatically pauses iTunes if your headphones get unplugged. This way if you rip those suckers out by mistake, you won't have to miss a second of your music. And also, the rest of the office won't have to be subjected to it.
- Facebook is adding new privacy controls today, and a chat service is coming soon.
- Ooh, Dalek webcam!
- XPN lets us know what they loved in Austin at SXSW.
- Hey, remember The Presidents of the United States of America? Well, every once in a while they get back together and put out another album. XPN has a free download from the latest one.
