Whiz of the Web: Tuesday Torpedoes

The shapeless dough of the internet, formed into tasty pellets and baked to perfection, just for you.

Mallrats

  • Sad and shocking news: Anthony Minghella has died. No news yet on the cause of death. He was 54. (Via Sarah)
  • Perhaps due to recent incidents of effeminate violence (via), some states are still trying to stop the sale of adult-themed video games to minors. Minnesota's latest attempt, which would have fined minors for buying M- or AO-rated games, has just been shot down. But that hasn't stopped Massachusetts from considering another such law, this one known as the "games-as-porn" bill because it "would restrict the sale of certain games to minors using the same rationale that prevents young people from buying pornography." D'oh. What the hell are you supposed to do if you can't get games or porn? Obviously the kids will have to turn to drugs and liquor. Good one, Massachusetts!
  • The Cloverfield DVD will be hitting stores on April 22nd (the same day as the PA primary—coincidence? Read the book!), and it will include a whole crapload of bonus features—including two alternate endings! Check out all the details over at Cinematical.
  • Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince will get a simultaneous IMAX release when the movie hits theaters on November 21.
  • Frank Miller has updated the production blog for The Spirit with a post about the evolution of the character of Ellen Dolan. He even says he loves "writing tough, powerful women," a comment that might amuse some of his critics. One thing bugs us about this, though—they're calling each of the individual entries on this journal a blog. No, no, no. The blog is the site itself. A post on the blog is called an entry. It's a pet peeve of ours... (Via)
  • Superfriends meets Mallrats in this hilarious video with lots of NSFW language.
  • Peter Berg is attached to direct another big-screen adaptation of Frank Herbert's classic novel Dune for Paramount Pictures. Really? They're going to try that again? Well, okay. They're going to get Sting to prance around in his underwear again, right? It just wouldn't feel like Dune without that.
  • Speaking of live-action film adaptations of classic works of sci-fi, the rumor is that Pixar's first foray into live-action filmmaking may be a film based on Edgar Rice Burroughs' John Carter of Mars series.

  • Screenwriter John Fusco is going to adapt and update the 1954 Akira Kurosawa classic The Seven Samurai for Harvey Weinstein, after turning down the project several times. Apparently they're going to put the story in "a more contemporary setting among contractors like the Blackwater guys." Huh. Well, we'll withhold judgment until more details are available, but... remaking one of the most perfect movies ever made seems like a mistake to us.
  • Ah! Creepy "realistic" Super Mario! Don't click if your sanity feels fragile at all.
  • Super Smash Bros. Brawl is now "the fastest-selling game in Nintendo of America history." We're talking an average of 120 copies of Brawl being sold every minute during the first week the game was on sale.
  • Sam Raimi got a greenlight for one of his TV shows the other day, and now here comes another one: the CW just gave the thumbs up to his reality/horror show with the working title 13. This would be an eight-episode series debuting in the summer that would take contestants on a journey with horror-movie-like challenges and games designed to frighten them along the way.
  • Matrix cast member Collin Chou says he will be one of four leads in a new fantasy ninja film that will be produced by Larry and Andy Wachowski (they won't be directing this time). According to Variety the film will be called Ninja Assassin, but Chou couldn't confirm that.
  • If celebrating St. Patrick's Day in the real world just isn't enough, never fear! You can also take the party into any one of a number of virtual worlds. (Via)
  • The top pick for the titular role in Prince of Persia? An actual Persian prince! Hey, good choice!
  • MapQuest, huffing and puffing to keep up with Google Maps, has just added real-time traffic info.
  • Shiny Shiny has found a hi-tech WiFi umbrella with a built-in camera that can transmit all content wirelessly to Flickr with the touch of a button on the handle. "You can then view the content on the inside of your umbrella, by snapping your wrist." That's hot.
  • This just in from Dominic Monaghan: Hugh Jackman is a fine, fine man. Also, apparently Monaghan's part in the Wolverine movie is already filmed and in the can, and Wolverine gets to play poker in the movie against an actual World Series of Poker Champion.
  • Entertainment Weekly's interesting recent interview with Christian Bale sees the actor opening up about Batman, Heath Ledger, the new Terminator film, and the Depression-era film he's doing with Michael Mann. Good stuff. (Via)
