Can't Miss This!
Wouldn't it be great if Thursday was the new Friday? A 4:3 ratio of weekdays to days off would serve to alleviate as much as 20% of the workweek stress in the population. On what do we base this theory? A hunch. A very well-researched, frequently replicated and peer-reviewed study, conducted in real-time in actual and not virtual or simulated environments. But alas, this is but a dream. Let us distract ourselves this evening with some sights, some sounds, and perhaps a few delicious (if overpriced) brewskies.

MIRO DANCE THEATRE: OPEN STUDIO SERIES FEATURING COMPOSER PETER M. WYER
Miro Dance Theatre, whose founders we interviewed last year about the creation of the Studio Series, is hosting British composer Peter M. Wyer's CD release tonight. Wyer will perform selections from the new album, Stories From the City at Night. The accomplished composer has done work for and with the dance company in the past (not to mention the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Julliard School). Yes, we're very impressed with his resume (and his music samples), but what hooked us is the price: $0. For a survey of his work and a live performance, that's a steal.

This exhibition, which has been around since January, includes alumnae works in a variety of formats. The pieces explore the idea of tension from many perspectives and provide an excellent glimpse into the ways in which each artist perceives the concept. It's also a great chance to see what kind of influence the College has had on its former students. It doesn't have to be First Friday for you to enjoy a nice gallery outing, so check it out. Also, you can sit down and make a fiber collage during your visit. Hey, be nice—no bowel regularity jokes! Best of all, you can leave your wallet at home for this one, too.
WHO: Anyone!
WHERE: The Galleries at Moore, 20th and The Parkway (map)
WHEN: From 11am to 7pm
HOW MUCH: Free, free, and free.
THE POGUES AT THE ELECTRIC FACTORY
Punkish purveyors of Irish classics and gritty original tunes, the Pogues are providing our alcohol-fueled reverie for the night. Hailing from London, they bring the fire. Originally named Pogues Mahone, "kiss my ass" in Anglicized Irish, you can guess how much fun their show is going to be. And Marseille Figs are rocking support with some experimental poppy pop. Yes, we know the Electric Factory violates their customers' souls with the drink prices (and tonight's ticket prices are not particularly pretty, either), but drinking on a weeknight is not done right unless it is done with reckless abandon, so go drop those bills and raise your BAC. Just don't drive home sloshed: you should be cabbin' it up if you're throwin' 'em back.
WHO: Anyone can go, 21+ to drink
WHERE: The Electric Factory, on 7th Street, one block north of Callowhill Street (map)
WHEN: 8:30pm
HOW MUCH: $60. Get 'em here. Might be available cheaper here or here. No promises. May the Force be with you.
