Eerie Legends
Ghost stories appeal to us all, but there's nothing like a delve into the more sinister side of apparitions and legends rather than your rather run-of-the-mill hauntings, and here are a few for you which'll have you looking over your shoulder for a while.
First stop is the bizarre spook said to be of a large white humanoid, often seen holding a baby in the vicinity of Fishtown's Palmer Cemetery. Considering the several thousand bodies harbored by the soil, wraiths are actually few and far between—but this particular ghoul has often freaked visitors out as it stares over the surrounding wall.
Certainly, one of the eeriest places in Philly is "Satanville" in Pennsbury Township, Chester County. This strange, and heavily fortified, property off Cossart Road had intrigued investigators and teens for many years, and became known as Devil's Road among some.
Legend has it that abundant clandestine occult activity occurs here. Such diabolical practices may well be nothing more than local rumor, but anyone brave enough to venture onto the gloomy grounds will encounter a weird-shaped tree known as Skull Tree, marvel at the inverted-cross shaped windows, and be chilled by the building said to harbor all manner of spirits that the imagination will surely stir up. We've also heard that security is pretty frosty!
Ghost Mountain is another place of high strangeness. Situated in Bucks County, Buckwampum Hill is a place of history and old tales. Most of these are urban legends, from yarns pertaining to a race of cannibalistic albino psychos said to inhabit the dark corners, to spirits who rise from the Indian burial grounds that are housed deep within the rocks.
The Witches Chair of Bristol Township, Bucks County is another spooky legend. The grave of a Merritt Wright is said to cause strange activity in the St. James Episcopal Cemetery, because a wrought-iron chair is often seen next to where the woman lies. It is said that should you wish to sit on it, you will be embraced by unseen arms. The spirit of the darkly-clad figure is often seen sitting in the chair...
Next week, haunted bridges...
