Whiz of the Web: Friday Fried Onions
A steaming hot pile of our favorite things from around the internets.

- Looks like Spore is coming to the iPhone, too.
- People, do you know what weekend it is? It's Super Smash Bros. Brawl launch weekend!! GameStop will be holding Brawl tournaments and midnight launches this Saturday at 2,500 of its stores, including a number in Philadelphia (via). Joystiq has their own first impressions of the game, as well as a metareview. Finally, they also have a link to a MySpace site that features their favorite rap song about the game. Dear lord.
- How do you like this: Microsoft is in talks with Sony about the possibility of adding Blu-ray technology to the Xbox 360.
- A former employee of the ESRB is spilling his guts in the latest issue of EGM about the flaws in the group's rating system.
- What do you get if you cross Super Mario Bros. with Doom? This. (Via Star)
- The town of South Pasadena on the edge of Los Angeles has named every first week of March from now on as No Cussing Week. The movement was started by a 14-year-old boy who was tired of all that cussing he was hearing, and thus put together a No Cussing Club. (Via Jill)
- PC Magazine lists the best free software. Adobe Reader? Seriously? We hate that program. Or maybe it's just that we hate PDFs... (Via Esther)
- Trekkers, ready your wallets: Paramount may be planning to re-release all 10 Star Trek movies on DVD with a bonus disc of extra material.
- A programmer/hacker spent a few weeks writing a special homebrew version of his girlfriend's favorite game, the Nintendo DS game Bejeweled. After she reached a certain score, the screen cleared and a ring dropped down. Yep, he was asking her to marry him, in the geekiest way possible. She said yes. Awww!
- Unsurprisingly, EA has rejected Jack Thompson's offer to help them in their efforts to acquire Take Two, saying: "We feel that your past statements — including false claims about content in our games — make any collaboration with you impossible." Word.
- We suspect the upcoming film Wanted is probably going to suck. But the new trailer sure is hot.
- Mindwire V5 is a new British product that replaces the rumble from your video game controller with electric shocks. Yes, it actually electrocutes you. For fun!
- We love our Wii, and our DS. But we have to say, we're a little ashamed that those two consoles will soon be graced with the world's first competitive cheerleading game. Sweet lord.
- Now here's a really useful piece of software: Internet Explorer Retitler lets you change the text that shows up at the end of the title bar in IE. Just remember not to cuss! (Via)
- Now the Mario/Luigi campaign for president is a campaign we can support. (Although this Phillyist humbly asks that you also consider Hulk's campaign for president on his own website.)
- David Gordon Green is writing and directing a Suspiria remake. Suspiria is pretty much the only really decent film we've ever seen by Dario Argento; it's a visually stunning, horrifically gory horror flick. As for Green... well, we don't know much about him, but apparently he's an odd choice to work on this film.
- Here's the trailer for the upcoming Anna Nicole Smith biopic, Anna Nicole. Most anticipated film of the year? Are they also planning on beating Indy 4 at the box office, just like poor Uwe?
- We love the original 1951 version of The Thing (also known as The Thing From Another World), and we're gratified and amused to learn that it was a huge influence on George Romero – to the extent that he'd like to do a live stage version of the film.
- Web 3.0?! But we were just getting used to Web 2.0! Damn it!
- The Breeders have a new album coming in early April. Download a track from it for free via XPN.
- Two new posters for Iron Man! Why isn't this movie out yet?!
