What's new and/or interesting in Philly theaters this weekend.

Semi-ProMost Likely to Rule: Penelope
We should have a review of this Christina Ricci/James McAvoy fantasy romantic comedy a little later on today.

City of Men
A kind of follow-up to City of God from producer Fernando Meirelles features two teenagers who become fast friends growing up in a culture of violence and street gangs. As their eighteenth birthdays approach, one is getting ready to find the father he never met, while the other is trying to figure out how to be a father to his own son. When the two friends find each other on opposite sides of a gang war, they are forced to confront a shocking secret from their shared past. Sounds intriguing, and the reviews are extremely positive. Definitely worth a trip to the theater.

Most Likely to Suck: The Other Boleyn Girl
Based on the historical novel by Philippa Gregory, this film tells the story of sisters Anne (Natalie Portman) and Mary (Scarlett Johansson) Boleyn fighting over the affections of King Henry VIII (Eric Bana), first in the hopes of advancing themselves and their family, and later out of pure rivalry. We can't get through the trailer for this movie without snorting laughter; it just looks utterly ridiculous, like one long cat fight. Reviews are mixed, too. We'd say, skip it.

Semi-Pro
The freshness rating on this sucker—the latest comedy from Will Ferrell—is pretty abysmal. But the fact is, it's the latest comedy from Will Ferrell, so you already know what you're in for, and you already know whether you're going to see it or not. You either hate him and you're staying away, or you love him and you can't wait. In this one, Ferrell plays a former NBA basketball player who's hoping to get his small team, the Flint Tropics, a shot at being in the NBA by coaching them to a victory in the biggest game of the year. The film also stars Woody Harrelson, and was written by the same guy who did Old School. And for the record, we're rather fond of Ferrell and wouldn't mind seeing this one.
