Yo, Philly in the News

Philadelphia

  • Phillyist's favorite news item this morning is this one: twin 25-year-old internet hardcore gay porn stars Keyontyli and Taleon Goffney (apparently known as Keyon and Teyon in the biz), of New Jersey, have been arrested for a series of robberies in Philadelphia and New Jersey wherein they gained entry to businesses by cutting holes in the roofs using a handsaw and ax. In Nether Providence, they broke into Wawas, and Chief Richard Slifer of Nether Providence said cash, cigarettes and condoms had been among the items taken. You can't make this stuff up, people. If you want a plot synopsis of their most popular porn video, by all means, click through. There are also some great bits about how acrobatic Taleon is, and how he can swim like Flipper.
  • It's not clear how much it will cost, but the Nutter administration is determined to get a 311 system installed in Philadelphia by the end of the year. If you're in an emergency, you'd still dial 911, but for any other city service, you could call 311. Officials also plan to implement PhillyStat, "a program that will track data from city departments and from 3-1-1 calls to assess how agencies are performing."
  • "Student groups today will hold two separate events to urge the Philadelphia School District to keep and create small high schools in Kensington and Olney." In vaguely related news, "the University of Pennsylvania and Drexel University are in serious talks with the Philadelphia School District to jointly operate two small high schools in University City - the first venture of its kind for the district at the high school level." One of the schools would focus on international studies, the other on engineering and technology, and they would eventually be housed in the University City High School building, once it's renovated.
  • Mary-Rita D'Alessandro, who worked as an aide to both Ed Rendell and John F. Street when they were Mayors, is a leading candidate for the $180,000-a-year job of chief operations officer at the Delaware River Port Authority.
  • Two undercover officers witnessed a suspect in a drug transaction on Ingersoll Street near 18th Monday afternoon. Police followed when the suspect fled, and ended up in a car chase going the wrong way down a one way street. When the suspect jumped out of his car and started to raise his gun, police shot and killed him.
  • The defense claims that "a Burlington County man on trial for the rape and stabbing death of an Evesham woman should be cleared because of contaminated DNA evidence and a false confession."
