Whiz of the Web: Thirsty Thursday
A tall, icy glass of our favorite internet junk, just for you.

- The concept of controlling a computer and/or a video game with only your mind has been around for a long time, and lately it's been getting closer and closer to reality. Now it looks like the reality is finally here: a neuro-headset which interprets the interaction of neurons in the brain and sends them wirelessly to a USB dongle connected to your computer will go on sale later this year. - Famous, critically acclaimed comic book creator Art Spiegelman was at the Kelly Writers House recently, and you can download the audio of the entire discussion right here. It's interesting stuff! (Via Jill)
- According to Lois Lowry's blog, David Yates, who directed Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and is currently working on Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, will also be directing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
- Speaking of comic book-to-film adaptations, David Fincher is attached to direct the feature adaptation of Charles Burns' graphic novel Black Hole. Roger Avary and Neil Gaiman had been hired to adapt the screenplay back in 2006.
- Paramount has become the final Hollywood studio to adopt Sony's Blu-ray format exclusively, stating that they're "pleased that the industry is moving to a single high-definition format, as we believe it is in the best interest of the consumer." Well, we'd say that pretty much takes care of that. HD-DVD has gone the way of Betamax.
- "Leonardo DiCaprio is teaming up with Warner Brothers to produce a live-action film based on the Japanese manga and anime film Akira." Ruairi Robinson is directing, Gary Whitta is writing, and it's theoretically going to be a two-part epic. They're also moving it from New Tokyo to New Manhattan. Despite ourselves, we are very excited about this news.
- Huh. Another photo shoot recreating a sequence from a famous Hitchcock movie, amongst other thrillers and horror films. Weird. This time the star involved is Jessica Alba.
- Spike Jonze's comment about the leaked footage (which we posted yesterday) from his upcoming Where the Wild Things Are film is that it's a "clip [that] doesn't look or feel anything like the movie." Huh. Cinematical also collects together some of the bad buzz that's building around the movie, including the news that children were crying and begging to be removed from a test screening, and that Warner Bros. hates everything about Jonze's final cut and want the entire thing redone. Of course, not all of the rumors are bad; some who've seen test screenings love the film. So who knows? We'll have to wait and see.
- Heh. Simpsons writer and Nerd World contributor Matt Selman also happens to be a Penn alum, and he finally managed to slip a Penn reference into The Simpsons in a recent episode. (Via Jill)
- Someone stole a 4-ton railway bridge in the Czech Republic. A spokeswoman for the Czech police said, "We are not sure if it was taken for personal use or for its scrap value." (Via)
- The word from the man himself is that Edgar Wright has finally finished the script for Ant Man. He's also apparently working on another comic book adaptation: Scott Pilgrim.
- Universal has partnered with Hasbro to develop feature films based on at least four of their branded properties. Transformers and G.I. Joe are obviously already taken, and we believe Monopoly is spoken for, as well, which means we could be looking at movies based on Candy Land, Clue, Ouija, Battleship, Magic the Gathering and/or Stretch Armstrong. Hoo boy. In honor of this news, Cinematical has put together Seven Bad Ideas for Board Game Movies.
- The Saturn Awards are given out every year by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films to honor, recognize and promote genre entertainment. The nominees for 2007 have just been announced, and you can see the complete list over at Cinematical. There are some good choices here and some really horrible ones (Transformers for Best Science Fiction Film? Really?). The awards will be given out June 24th, and we'll be sure to let you know how it turns out.
- Ooh, J. Michael Straczynski is writing the film adaptation for World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War? We still respect him for creating Babylon 5, but... the guy is really not a very good writer. This is not good news.
- We've all heard stories of poor working shmoes getting fired for something they wrote on their blogs, but apparently it can happen to producers at CNN, as well. (Via Jill)
- Arabian Monkey has helpfully provided a complex flowchart to determine whether you dress like a douchebag or not. (Via Jill)

Oh those crazy Saturn Awards.
I would have liked to see Sunshine nominated for more categories. SUCH an underrated film, in my opinion.
I am ashamed to say that, even though I've wanted to see Sunshine since I first heard about it, I haven't gotten around to actually watching it yet. But it's on my iPod now, so it's only a matter of time...
