Home Game: College Hoops Edition

rsz_Drexel_Dragon.jpgThe Drexel Lady Dragons (14-10, 9-4) got a pair of solid home wins this week, topping Delaware and James Madison. Now they'll take the show on the road, heading to William & Mary tomorrow night before a big showdown with #10 Old Dominion on Sunday. Things weren't quite as peachy for the men (11-16, 4-11). They lost a tough double-overtime game to Old Dominion last Thursday. Fortunately, they edged out a win against Delaware over the weekend. Tonight, the Dragons have an away game at William & Mary. Then they'll return home to host Fairfield Saturday afternoon. (Tickets for all home games are available through the Drexel Ticket Office: 1-866-4-DREXEL.)

Over at La Salle, the Explorers don't have a lot left to play for. But that didn't stop them, both hoops teams took care of business. The men (11-13, 5-5) got an unsurprising blowout win over winless N.J.I.T. and then used a barrage of three-pointers to score a big upset over St. Joe's. The women (11-14, 3-7) dismantled another winless team, Fordham. Carlene Hightower earned her second straight A-10 Player of the Week nod for her performance against the Rams. On the plate for this week: the men host Dayton tomorrow night and then head to Duquesne on Sunday, while the women are at Rhode Island tonight before facing Xavier at home on Saturday. (Tickets for all home games are available through the La Salle Ticket Office: 215-951-1999.)

Penn's teams did about what you'd expect this week, splitting games against woefully mediocre Ivy League competition. The men (9-15, 4-3) lost to Brown but got a pretty comfortable win over Yale. The women (4-18, 1-6) did likewise, barely putting up a fight against Brown before topping Yale. Coming up this weekend for both the men and women are games against Dartmouth and Havard, on Friday and Saturday respectively. (We love the Ivy League—the only league that schedules nearly all of their games for Friday and Saturday nights, and coordinates the schedule geographically so that teams can play two games in a weekend, so as not to interfere with the players' studies.) The men will be on the road, while the women will be at home. (Tickets for all home games are available online.)

Things in Happy Valley aren't so happy for the Penn State Lady Lions (13-13, 4-10). They've lost seven in a row after dropping games to Minnesota and Michigan State this past week. The women will now head out on the road, playing at Illinois and Northwestern this coming week. The men (12-12, 4-8) squeaked out a win in their only game this past week, against Illinois. Tonight they'll try to upset #19 Michigan State for the second time this season, this time on the road. Then the Lions travel to Minnesota for a game Sunday.

St. Joe's basketball season now looks to be in wind-down mode. The men (16-8, 7-4) got a win over St. Bonaventure, but their loss to La Salle probably puts a dagger in any shot the Hawks had (which, granted, was minimal to begin with) of making the NCAA tournament. They might still have a chance if, and only if, they run the table in the rest of the regular season and go deep in the A-10 tournament. They'll have to start by beating another iffy-bubble team, Rhode Island, in a road game this weekend. Over on the women's (14-11, 6-4) side, St. Joe's got a win over Richmond. They'll host Temple tonight (tickets available through the St. Joe's Ticket Office: 610-660-1712), then #17 George Washington on Sunday (tickets).

The Temple women (15-11, 8-2) are giving the Owl faithful something to be a little excited about; they're tied for first in the A-10 thanks to their win over Duquesne on Sunday. The men (13-11, 6-4) got an overtime win over Rhode Island but then lost to Dayton. The bright spot for the Owls were guard Mark Tyndale, who won Big 5 Player of the Week honors, and center Lady Comfort who won A-10 Co-Player of the Week. Coming up, the women go to St. Joe's tonight, then welcome that winless Fordham team that the La Salle women beat up on this past week on Saturday afternoon (tickets). The men will be at St. Bonvanture tonight, then host Fordham in the second part of a Saturday afternoon double-header with the women (tickets).

Is it possible that the Villanova men (15-9, 5-7) have righted the ship after a win at St. John's? Let's hope so, because the next few games will be tough, and we sadly expect 'Nova's tournament bubble to be completely burst with just one more loss. They've got to take care of business against West Virginia tonight (sold out), because then they've got #13 UConn coming to town Saturday (sold out) and #25 Marquette on Monday (tickets). The women split their games this past week, beating Cincinnati but then losing to USF. Next, they'll head to #13 West Virginia to try and get an upset win on Saturday.
