NEXUS/foundation for today's art is a champion of local artists of all stripes; their commitment to maintain gallery space dedicated to local emerging and experimental artists has rightfully earned them a rep as a Philly art institution. The fruits of their mission will be on display tonight, as they present their new members exhibitions with an opening reception.
NEXUS holds two new member exhibitions a year, in September and February. This one features work by J. Makary, Leah Reynolds and Blaine Siegel. Each works with different media: J. Makary usually focuses on performance and video, making different disciplines “connect through conversation” with one another, combining elements of costuming, music, and dance with the goal of allowing a window to the unfamiliar through media we are familiar with. Leah Reynold, who often uses fabric in her art, offers a site-specific sculptural work, “Tidal,” which utilizes color, light, pattern, buoyancy, and weight. Blaine Segal displays both drawings and sculpture, examining war imagery and the media in light of how we process horror and integrate it (or not) into ourselves. All were chosen by peer review, and join a growing list of fantastic artists.
The opening reception is tonight, from 6-9PM at NEXUS/foundation for today's art gallery. The show runs through March 7 and, as always, admission to the gallery is free.
