The last time I saw Cat Power perform was the first and only time I saw the entire Trocadero fall in love at once. Her voice and her persona could only be described as haunting yet powerful. Some people showed in the hopes that she'd fall apart, as she has been wont to do, but a lot happens in a decade. Much more centered by the time The Greatest dropped, Chan Marshall prowled the stage like a sexy animal that was caged no longer.
Tonight she plays the Starlight Ballroom, touring in support of her latest album, Jukebox. Favorites by Bob Dylan, James Brown, Frank Sinatra, and Otis Redding are reinterpreted on this disc as only Marshall can. Backed by the Dirty Delta Blues Band (which includes Philly fave Judah Bauer), Marshall sings her way from blues to ballads, stopping even to cover herself from the Moon Pix album.
The show is sold out. Check Craigslist if that breaks your heart. We know it would break ours.
