Home Game: College Hoops Edition

rsz_Hawk.jpgThe Drexel Lady Dragons (11-9, 6-3) split their games this week, losing at Northeastern before coming away with a solid road win at Hofstra. In both games, the Dragons got a big contribution from sophomore forward Gabriela Marginean, who was named Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week for her efforts. The men (9-14, 2-9) went 0-2 (again) this week, dropping games to Georgia State and Northeastern. The two losses brings the Dragons' losing streak to five games. On deck for the men: home games against George Mason tomorrow night, and Towson on Saturday. The women host Georgia State tomorrow night, then go on the road to VCU Sunday. (Tickets for all home games are available through the Drexel Ticket Office: 1-866-4-DREXEL.)

The news over at La Salle hoops hasn't improved much. The women (9-13, 1-6) lost both their games this past week, first to Charlotte, then to Temple. The men (8-12, 3-4) didn't fare much better. Sure, they whooped St. Bonaventure, but the Bonnies are pretty hapless. And then they lost on the road, albeit to a significantly superior Xavier team. Next up for the men, a road game at A-10 doormat George Washington tonight, followed by a home game Saturday against Duquesne. The women host UMass tonight, then head to St. Louis on Sunday. (Tickets for all home games are available through the La Salle Ticket Office: 215-951-1999.)

Only in the Ivy League could the Penn men (7-12, 2-0) find themselves in the hunt for a conference championship. But the Quakers are undefeated in Ivy League play after beating Harvard and Dartmouth this week. Now the Penn men will go on the road, first to Columbia, then to Cornell (which is probably the only team in the Ivy Leagure that can actually play a little basketball this year). They'll return home to host Princeton next Tuesday. Over on the women's (3-15, 0-3), things haven't improved. They lost to Harvard, then to Dartmouth. On their upcoming schedule, they'll host Columbia on Friday night, then follow that up with a game at home against Cornell on Saturday. (Tickets for all home games available online.)

In Nittany Lion country, the Penn State men (11-11, 3-7) scored a big upset win over #7 Michigan State. Unfortunately, they couldn't keep the momentum going, and lost to #24 Purdue. Next up, the Lions head to Michigan for a game on Saturday. The Lady Lions (13-9, 4-6) were thoroughly unimpressive in losing to Wisconsin. The women will be at Michigan tomorrow night, and then host Iowa (tickets) on Sunday afternoon.

St. Joe's had a pretty good week on the hardwood. The men (15-5, 6-1) have now won six in a row after wins at George Washington and at home against Fordham and Villanova. Senior Pat Calathes earned his second straight co-Big 5 Player of the Week honors. The women (11-10, 3-3), split their games, losing to Temple before bouncing back to beat UMass. This week, the men will be on the road, traveling to Duquesne tonight, then #13 Xavier on Sunday. The women have a pair of home games, against St. Louis tonight (call the St. Joe's box office at 610-662-1712 for tickets) and Duquesne on Saturday (tickets). Then they'll head on the road to play Charlotte next Tuesday.

The Temple hoopsters had a big week, going undefeated. The women (13-10, 6-1) continue their ownership of the Big 5, winning their fourth straight Big 5 title with wins over St. Joe's and La Salle, with a huge contribution from senior center Lady Comfort, who won Big 5 Player of the Week honors. The men (11-9, 4-2) got wins over Fordham and George Washington, with co-Big 5 Player of the Week honors going to senior guard Chris Clark. They'll try to keep the roll going at Richmond tonight and then at home against UMass on Sunday afternoon (tickets). The women are hosting Charlotte at this very moment, and next they go on the road to Xavier for a game Saturday.

The Villanova men (13-8, 3-6) are now officially in free fall. The Wildcats have lost five in a row after dropping this past week's games against Pitt, Syracuse and St. Joe's. They'll try to get something right in a sold-out home game against Seton Hall on Saturday, and then things could get ugly on Monday night, when Villanova travels to #6 Georgetown. The women (12-10, 2-7) haven't fared any better than the men lately. They dropped games against #14 Pitt and #23 DePaul this week. The good news for them is that their next few games are against unranked opponents. Coming up, they'll be at St. John's Saturday before returning home to host Providence next Tuesday (tickets).
