What's new and/or interesting in Philly theaters this weekend.

We offered you free tickets to this movie earlier in the week, and as we said in that post, the film is a documentary about an event known as the Rape of Nanking, when the Japanese army invaded the Chinese city of Nanking in the winter of 1937 and murdered over 200,000 people, raping tens of thousands. A small group of Europeans and Americans worked together to save 250,000 people from the violence. This story is told by actors reading the letters and diaries of the people who were actually there. So, yeah, not a great date movie, maybe, but it's being extremely well received by critics, and it sounds important and powerful.

Teeth
Another great date movie! An innocent Christian high school girl with an aggressive boyfriend and an immoral teenage brother discovers she's got a little something more downstairs than most. If the words "vagina dentata" don't mean anything to you, click through and prepare to be scarred! Anyways, this film describes itself as "part horror film, part erotic/moral debate, and part outrageous assault on male vulnerability and fear." It sounds like it gets a little heavy-handed with the message-making, but it's getting mostly good reviews, so it could be worth a view. Guys might want to wear cups to the screening, however. You know, just in case.

How She Move
A talented and intelligent daughter of Jamaican immigrants escapes her drug and crime-infested neighborhood when she's accepted to an exclusive academy, but then must return home when her sister dies of an overdose. A step competition with a $50,000 cash prize could not only be the way out for her and her family, but also a way for her to discover herself. Reviews of this one are mixed, and we have to admit it sounds pretty lame to us. Might be fun to watch just for the dance moves, though, if you're into that kind of thing.

Most Likely to Suck: Meet the Spartans
This "comedy" from the makers of the truly awful Scary Movie franchise claims to be spoofing a bunch of recent epic films (with a particular focus on 300, apparently). It made our list of the least anticipated movies of 2008, so you already know how we feel about it. And if you've seen the ads, you probably feel the same way; it's a pretty bad sign if they couldn't even dredge up one funny scene to put in the trailer.

Rambo
We'll have a review of the latest, super-violent entry in Stallone's famous action/drama series later on this morning.

Untraceable
Diane Lane plays an agent in the FBI's cybercrime division trying to track down one of those crazed, torture-happy criminal masterminds who appear in movies so much, except this one has an untraceable website where he posts live video of his victims, and as time runs out for them, he plays a cat-and-mouse game with her. Looks like Saw crossed with The Net, and we didn't like either of those movies all that much.
