There's a new big boss man in the City of Brotherly Love, which means there's a new column on Phillyist. Each week, we'll be tracking Michael Nutter's mayorship (which we only found out was a word when spellcheck didn't correct it) and giving you the Reader's Digest version of the week that was in Nutter's tenure. Think of it as SportsCenter for the new man in charge: You might not have seen the whole story unfold, so we'll try to give you the highlights.
Monday: Michael was officially sworn in as the 98th mayor of Philadelphia at the Academy of Music. His inaugural address was more or less a regurgitation of everything he said during his campaign. ::yawn:: But at least he got down at his inaugural party, as proven by the insert video.
Tuesday: Michael hosted an open house at City Hall—which was apparently attended by about 3000 people—to encourage the public to visit the government center. This was a marked change from how Mayors Rendell and Street spent their respective first days in office. And he was courted by Vincent Fumo to reverse the Street administration's backing of the casinos.
Wednesday: Michael had a pretty quiet day, visiting his high school alma mater and trumpeting the city's receipt of over $600,000 in federal grant money to be used for improving SEPTA's emergency communications infrastructure. Now if only we could get some money to improve SEPTA's "run on time" infrastructure.
Thursday: Michael announced that he would be reviewing the late-term appointments made by former Mayor Street, including Street's appointment of his son, Sharif Street, to the Zoning Code Commission. We know that Michael plans on cleaning house, with only a couple of exceptions, so we expect that these appointees will be getting the ax in short order as Michael clears most of the vestiges of Street's administration.
Due to the timing of this post, each Friday's news will be covered the following week because, let's face it, we just recap the news – we don't predict it.
