Whiz of the Web: Tuesday Torpedoes
The shapeless dough of the internet, formed into tasty pellets and baked to perfection, just for you.

- The Golden Globes have been sort of cancelled! They'll still be announcing the winners in an hour-long press conference on NBC, but no stars will be there and there won't be any parties or celebrations. It's all due to the writers' strike, of course.
- Speaking of the writers' strike, more and more of the independent studios are making side deals with the WGA in order to get work done.
- Today's CES updates: Sony says it'll be entering into battle with software companies and offering video downloads on the PlayStation Network. Sony also unveiled a new 16GB Memory Stick Pro Duo that will cost $300 when it comes out in March. Future Blu-Ray movies will also include a version of the film optimized for viewing on the PSP, which can be transferred onto the portable device via the PS3. Sony has the worst idea we've ever heard for how to sell DRM-free music. Most interesting, though, is that the PlayStation 2 will be the cornerstone of Sony's plan to compete with the Wii. Is that Sony admitting that the PS3 is a failure or is it just us? We've also got the amusing videos from Bill Gate's keynote that we mentioned yesterday. And watch an interview with France's most famous blogger, who peed next to Bill Gates once (he tells that story at 5:50). In other Microsoft news, here's a list of new titles for the company's Games for Windows endeavor. Nyko has a bunch of fun peripherals coming out this year, and finally, Shiny Shiny takes another look at the sweet R2-D2 DVD projector.
- Google has filed a patent for extracting text contained in images and videos. Which seems to mean they're planning on making pictures and movies searchable by the words that appear inside them. So, they're patenting magic. Crazy bastards. (Via Jill)
- Apparently some frustrated Xbox Live customers weren't bought off with the promise of a free game, as Microsoft has just had a class action suit filed against it in response to the interruptions and glitches that have been showing up in the Live service for the past several weeks.
- Game|Life answers the Ten Burning Questions they asked at the beginning of 2007, and gives Predictions (And Advice) For 2008.
- Some screenshots from the upcoming LEGO Batman video game.
- Marlon Wayans will be playing Ripcord in the G.I. Joe movie, and word is Joseph Gordon Levitt is in negotiations to join the cast as well, though what his part will be is not clear.
- The Movie Blog has unveiled its most anticipated movies of 2008. (We had a list like that, too...)
- Hayden Christensen might play the main character in a film adaptation of William Gibson's Neuromancer.
- Ukrainian actress Olga Kurylenko has been cast as the female lead in Bond 22. And while we're talking 007, here are pics of Daniel Craig and Judi Dench from the set (via).
- XPN's morning download today is a track off of Iron & Wine's recent album, The Shepherd's Dog.
- Lots of info and rumors about the upcoming Star Trek movie, most of which we're not reading for fear of spoilers.
- In a recent interview with MTV, director Michel Gondry dropped some tantalizing hints about his next film, The Return of the Ice Kings.
- Speaking of interviews with MTV, David Fincher told the site he'd love to see a Fight Club musical when the film has its 10-year anniversary.
- The effects of Gerstmann-gate continue to be felt at Gamespot as a longtime freelancer and major contributor to the site recently announced he was quitting over the incident.
