What's new and/or interesting in Philly theaters this weekend
Most Likely to Suck & Most Likely to Rule: Alien vs. Predator: Requiem - The sequel to Alien vs. Predator picks up right where the last one ended, with the Predator spaceship, secretly infested with Aliens, leaving Earth. Of course it crashes right back down on our planet almost before the opening credits are over, no doubt leading to the deaths of many attractive young people. We have to say we rather enjoyed the original AvP movie, and so we're rather looking forward to seeing this one, despite the abysmal freshness rating. Thus the suck/rule dichotomy.

The Great Debaters - Denzel Washington directs and stars in this film adaptation of the true story of "a temperamental debate coach who molded the students of a small East Texas college into a formidable team that gave Harvard's squad a run for their money in the 1930s." Denzel, of course, plays the coach, and Forest Whitaker plays a father of one of the students in the team who is resentful of the coach's influence over his son. The son is played, amusingly enough, by Denzel Whitaker, who, as far as we can tell, is not related to Denzel Washington or Forest Whitaker. Anyway, this one's got some impressive talent, what sounds like a pretty interesting story (even if it does have that "inspirational sports movie" feel to it), and a pretty decent freshness rating, so it's probably worth a viewing.

The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep - This film adaptation of a popular children's novel sounds like E.T. by way of Free Willy. A boy finds a mysterious egg on the shores of a Scottish loch, out of which hatches a strange little creature that quickly grows into a gigantic "water horse." The boy has to think fast to keep his newfound friend out of the hands of research scientists and get him back to his aquatic home. The kid's mother is played by Emily Watson, and Brian Cox also stars. Seems like your typical kids' movie to us, but the reviews are pretty good.

Seriously? You actually enjoyed AvP? Did April Fool's Day come early?
I don't understand why everybody gives that movie such a hard time. I think the only thing anybody could reasonably expect out of such a movie was Aliens fighting Predators, and that's what we got. Besides that, the plot was pretty interesting, the action and effects were good, and although the acting wasn't great, there wasn't any wince-worthy dialogue. What more do you want?
