Yo, Philly in the News

al12-17-07.jpg

  • CBS 3 anchor Alycia Lane was arrested at 2:04 AM yesterday at the corner of W. 17th Street and 9th Avenue in NYC for allegedly punching a female police officer in the face. She was locked up in a New York jail cell as of yesterday afternoon. More on this story later. (Via Jason)
  • TV star Bam Margera of West Chester, along with business partner and bar owner Don Moore, plans "to open a theater, capped by an old-fashioned marquee, in an empty storefront in the business district. Construction is under way for a projected opening in the spring. The theater, so far unnamed, will book musical acts and stand-up comedians and will show films."
  • Montgomery County District Attorney Bruce L. Castor Jr. says he has "accomplished everything that I think I can as district attorney" and is therefore leaving the post to become a county commissioner next month.
  • As part of the Philadelphia City Hall corruption case, a video was taken by a hidden FBI camera of a meeting between of Al Sharpton and Ronald A. White inside a New York hotel suite in 2003. In the video, Sharpton offers to help White win a multimillion-dollar business deal, if White helps him raise $50,000 for politics. "The tape helped spark a separate inquiry into Sharpton's 2004 campaign and his civil-rights organization, the National Action Network." Sharpton aides received subpoenas on Wednesday. Sharpton says there's nothing illegal about tying business deals to fund-raising, and that the tapes actually vindicate him, because: "They show that I did not talk about bribing a public official or paying money under the table."
  • The Philadelphia Inquirer has the details on the funeral of fourteen-year-old Ebony Nicole Dorsey, which was held on Saturday at her school, Wissahickon High School.
  • The Pace Personal Care Boarding Home in the 1800 block of Green Street, which housed physically and mentally challenged residents, was deliberately set on fire early Saturday morning by one of the residents after an argument with another resident. The fire, although it was brought under control within a half-hour, caused the death of one man, and seriously injured two others.
