Gonna See a Revival Tonight

SoulSavers_Cover.jpgThey may not actually save your soul, but the Soulsavers (MySpace) - an English production and remix team comprised of members Rich Machin and Ian Glover - do have a spiritual (though not so spiritual agnostics, like this Phillyist, can't enjoy it) new album out now (It's Not How Far You Fall, It's The Way You Land, their second) which will at least entertain you, and they're coming to the mighty North Star tonight to play tracks from it (as well as older material, we're sure). Also working with them on the album, and joining them on stage tonight, is founding member of Screaming Trees and former contributor to Queens of the Stone Age, singer-songwriter Mark Lanegan.

The album has influences varying from classic rock to blues to soul to gospel to indie to Nick Cave. It moves slow and low, but with a strong beat, and although there are a few instrumental tracks, when the vocals are there, they've got a very effective, grizzled, emotional sound with a lot of depth to it. Actually, the album in general is quite emotional and deeply felt, only dipping into the melodramatic, over-done, and forgettable on a couple of tracks ("Spiritual" and "Through My Sails"). The rest of the album is very strong, especially tracks like "Revival," "Ghosts of You and Me," "Paper Money", "Jesus of Nothing," and "Kingdoms of Rain" - the latter of which you can check out online in Windows Media Player and Quicktime formats. Then you can experience the revival for yourself live tonight at the North Star.
