Yo, Philly in the News

  • The Inquirer has an article about the Philadelphia Community Cats Council, a group of folks trying to manage and reduce the city's huge feral cat population, estimated to be at least 250,000. They do this by trapping feral cats, neutering them, and then returning them where they were found.
  • Both the Daily News and the Inquirer have articles about Sharon Hill native John Patrick Foley and his elevation this weekend to the status of Cardinal of the Catholic Church.
  • The Inquirer points out that Sandra Dungee Glenn, the new head of the Philadelphia School Reform Commission, is an intensely private person, but they also list some personal details they've dug out about her - like the fact that she loves Desperate Housewives. Ah, that's the hard-hitting Philadelphia Inquirer for you!
  • Yesterday, a Nicetown fundraiser for the family of slain Philadelphia police officer Chuck Cassidy raised close to $1,300.
  • This weekend's violence tally: three separate incidents, two fatal shootings, and a stabbing that left a 24-year-old 7-Eleven clerk in critical but stable condition with a collapsed lung. The clerk at the store on John F. Kennedy Boulevard near 18th asked a man looking at a porn magazine to leave the store, and the man flew into a rage and stabbed the clerk repeatedly, even though the store was filled with customers at the time. Click through for a description and a picture of the suspect.
  • A Filipino immigrant couple with four US-born children who have lived in Pennsylvania for 25 years "are under orders to report to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement office in Philadelphia today to be processed for removal," because they made a mistake and failed to update the marital status on their visa applications between the time they originally filed the applications and when those applications were finally granted. Many people are supporting their struggle to stay in the United States, and their lawyers are trying a last ditch appeal to Congress for rare private immigration legislation.
