Fall is a busy time for Phillyist, and as such we don’t really get to put in as much volunteer face time as we do in the slow days of summer. So ‘tis the season to poke around and find some easy and painless ways to support local causes.
Luckily we didn’t have to poke long. Good Search, an organization that has been around for a few years but somehow escaped our notice, will donate money to charity for every Internet search you launch through their site. And that’s all you have to do. Seriously. Seem too good to be true? Well, Oprah can’t be wrong… as long as it doesn’t involve memoir writing, that is.
And that’s not all. Good Search partners with retail outfits; go to a retail site from Good Search’s page and that site will donate a percentage of your purchase back to Good Search (and hence the charity of your choice). What a way to extend that holiday cheer. Barnes and Noble is in on the act, as is Apple Store, iTunes, Macy’s, Old Navy, and Sephora, to name a few. Amazon is “coming soon” (we hope very soon, since we spend way too much money there, and it would be nice to have a slight balm for the soul to ease the guilt of shopping the corporate monolith).
There are thousands of charities to choose from, with loads in Philly; our quick search turned up ActionAIDS, The Historical Society of Pennsylvania, Ronald McDonald House, and Women in Transition. You can search their participating non-profits list by state (the city is listed). Choose your charity, and search/shop away. If you work with a charity you want to be listed, you can sign them up. You can change your charity at any time, a new one every day if you desire. It’s good to spread the love (and cash) all around.
Thanks to Debbie Foster for the tip!
